Default Salt in fuel tank

Has anyone ever had someone to this terrible act of putting salt in the gas tank. I only drove it about 6 miles until he made me aware that he did something to my car in which i found this. Does anyone know the effects it will have? 2001 Camaro SS

Take out the gas tank and clean the **** out of it. The salt will mess up the cylinder walls. not to mention clog up a bunch of stuff. Thats a prank that bunch of young kids used to do back in the day. I didnt think they were still doing that. Sorry about your expirience.

Are you sure the salt can mess up the cylinder walls? I talked to a very knowledgeable engine builder and he didn't think the salt would mess things up like sugar would. I was thinking at least drop the tank, clean it very good, replace the fuel filter, and then unhook the fuel line at the fuel rails and flush the fuel line out. Not sure if the injectors would need to be pulled.

Pump the tank out. How much did he put in? A teaspoon vs. a quart is a big difference.

More than a teaspoon, salt laying around the flap, I stuck my finger in thru the flap and it was pretty thick.

A couple things.

I'm not really sure the soluability index for salt in gasoline, but I'm sure it's somewhat soluable depending on concentration. Anything that didn't get dissolved will be trapped by the fuel filter.

Start by disconnecting and removing the fuel filter, let the tank empty, flush the tank with methanol or more gasoline to completely flush it.
Next, when you recconect the gas tank, disconnect the fuel line going into the injector rail and do a couple key-on, key-off routines to push the clean gas to the fuel rail. Let the fuel rail empty as well.

Once you do all of this you should be okay.

If you want to pull a prank on someone that isn't destructive, but merely embarrasing, put a quart of oil in their gas tank. It'll smoke like a chimney but won't really hurt the motor. You'll kill mosquitoes for miles though.

So you don't think the injectors need to be pulled and cleaned or changed?

To be safe, I would Flush the Fuel tank, lines, fuel rail and change the fuel filter. Run some good grade of Gas (Chevron w/Techron). Might also try some other additives to clean the system and injectors. (Lucas or Seaform)

Injectors or not a servicable unit. (unless you have the equipement that the FI service centers have). Running the additives will help.

I don't think anything is damaged. Just your time and pocket book.

I'm glad I could help. And this is why my gas tanks have locks on them.

the destructiveness of various solids in your engine has been pretty overrated for quite a while now.. Sugar actually won't destroy your car or lock up your engine or gunk it all to hell. Salt however is corrosive, so if you do leave it in the tank it could seriously accelerate the rusting process of any metals it comes into contact with. Flush the tank, replace the fuel filter, put a good tank of gas in it and you should be fine. I would make sure to drive it a good bit afterward to flush the fuel lines out.

Oh, and buy a gun

Just a thought dont ls1 gas tanks have that little ball in there. Its suppose to be one way to prevent the theft of gas. Who ever did it just cause you a small problem.
