Can you pull and replace ls1's from the top?

Yes the motor can be pulled and replaced from the top. I know because I just did mine. The only "worst" part about doing it from the top is that you will more than likely break the oil pressure sender on the back of the block. So be sure to remove it if you decide to pull it from the top. You will also have to loosen and just drop the AC condenser down in order for the motor to clear. You will probably goober up the area above the firewall but it's no biggy just be careful when lifting the motor and you won't. Also, if I had to to mine again I would most definitely remove the crank pulley and water pump. It will give you a ton more clearance room. If you have a car lift available then I would take advantage of that. I didn't have one available so I had to do with what I had.
Use a decent engine hoist and your much better off, it does need to twist a little but if you take the hood off I'm sure it's much easier.
