Default Another Cam Question

Hey everyone. I have a 99 T/A A4. My mods are LT's, TD's w/Cats, LS6 intake, Lid, FRA, Ported TB, 4k stall, and a Transgo shift kit. I have the stock 2.73's in the rear. I may or may not change that later. I was going to just do a basic tune on it then do a cam in a couple of months, but now I'm thinking of just doing the cam and dyno tune it now to be done with it and save a little money by just getting it tuned once.

I need advice on what cam to get. This is my daily driver and sees no track time. With my 4k stall I was thinking maybe a cam that makes power around 3k or more. Maybe I should get one custom spec'd? I was thinking something in the 23x range. I would like a little bit of a choppy idle, but not so much it would be difficult to tune. Any suggestions would be appreciated especially if you have a stalled auto.

Thanks in advance.

since your running a big 4k stall, i would say any cam in the low 230's would be good.

any cam

more importantly you need to change those gears...they'll KILL you.

the F14 or Torquer 2 would be great choices.

The gears will kill you at the track but if you are looking for a killer cam that will take full advantage of the 4K stall, our TRak cam will work extremely well. Its basically a baby TRex. Specs are 231/234 .647"/.595" 112.

You really could probably find 3.23 or 3.42 used gears in the classifieds for under $50! So gear swapping should be really cheap if you want some extra gear.

I think Shane is on the right track definately. We sell the Torquer 3 camshaft which is very similar to Thunder Trak Cam. Both are proven performers & make good power across the board. If your looking for something a little smaller the 228R or 228/232 camshaft both have worked great for us. I've seen tons of 400rwhp automatic stall cars with PRC heads & the 228R camshaft! Near stock driveability, 400rwhp, & low 11 second time slips make the 228R combo a definate possibility.

I'd send some extra time in the dyno section when you get some extra time, there's huge numbers of independent dyno sheets you can checkout!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I was thinking of keeping the 2.73's only to maintain some sort of mileage out of the car. It doesn't see any track time right now and may never. I wonder how much mileage I would lose going to a lower gear. The general concensus seems to be swap gears.

I will definitely look into the TRak Cam and Torquer 3 some more.

Texas-Speed - I remember looking at the Torquer 3 a couple of months ago when I bought my headers from you guys. You have some nice stuff and were great to do business with.

How are the idles on these 2 cams? I'm not really looking to be a sleeper. I want to break up the monotony of that smooth factory idle as well as wake the car up.

I would love to hear more opinions from others as well.

If you do a lot of city driving you will prolly pick up MPG a little with gears. Hiway prolly not.

I do about an even mix of city/highway, so maybe gears won't have that much of an affect.
