Default 160 Thermo question

I was wondering if i should change out my thermostat to prevent detenation with a 160 degree thermostat. I have Diamond pistons with -2cc valve releifs on scat h beam rods 6.125 length. The heads are TSP PRC stage 2.5 milled down to 59cc chambers. the Camshaft i have is TSP 233/239 on 112 LSA. the intake i am using is a standard ls6 intake. i was just wondering if this will help me or actually hurt me? thanks

It wouldn't hurt to change it out. Just need your fans programmed to come on at a lower temp. to take advantage of it.

I think it was an easy mod that made the motor run cooler. It was one of the first mods I did to my car about 6 years ago and its still running strong with 134k. The car had 25k when I bought it. Just remember if your not reprogramming the fans then it wont be as good as it could be. It also depends on where you live, up north I might think twice about it but in the south, go for it.

If you dont have one get a electric water pump(a race one) that is high flow and ditch the thermostat all together.

When i tuned my car the tuner had played with my fans so i could add the 160* t-stat. I never thought it was going to make a difference, but recently i had to change out my water pump. I decided on getting a 160* t-stat as well, and what a difference. Not performance wise but by using a hand held scanner i can see the car is running alot cooler than before.

in really hot temperatures, i was getting a little knock retard showing on a scanner. after i switched to the 160tstat, it seemed to help. the coolant temp reads under 180 on the freeway and when its hot outside, i can jump on the throttle without any knock retard showing up - for me, that was the biggest gain.

i was running 230+ in traffic in 100* heat. i found out the factory fans come on at like 228 or some ****. i had my tuner turn mine on at 195 and it stays between there and 205* all the time now. all this was with a 160 thermostat.

Same thing here, ever since installed the 160* my temp has never gotten anywhere near 230*.

**I found the thread from when i changed out my water pump and swapped to the 160* t-stat. Prior to 160* i would see temps as high as 224*, and im sure on extremely hot south fl. days it would climb to 230*. The highest it ever got while driving around since the install has been 194*. Which is a nice drop from the usual 220*+ that i would see before changing it out.

After 8 years of a 160, I switched back to stock and programmed the fans for 200.
