The only cam you can use on stock LS1 springs is the stock LS1 cam. You will HAVE to get better springs if you want a bigger cam plan and simple. You can get a replacement LS2 chain for $40 so you might as well. if the motor is from an 01 or 02 it already has pretty good bolts from the factory and just go with new OEM head bolts unless you want to go with some ARP bolts fpr $150. You are gonna have to spend some money if you want to hit your 400rwhp goal.

You might as well change the timing chain while your already in there, as said above the LS2 chain is a cheap and durable replacement. If you want to get an insanely large cam then something like the MS4 from Texas-Speed, or maybe the TRex from Thunder Racing. If you want to keep stock springs then your out of luck, the stockers will **** themselves with either of the two cams above. I understand you want to go cheap, but don't take the cheap route to only have major failure, because you wanted to be cheap. Also don't forget just because your getting a huge cam and putting down alot of peak hp doesn't mean your car is going to be fast. Yes 400rwhp is possible with a large cam, im pushing 386 to the wheels through the LS1 intake and unported TB. You can always have a custom cam grinded for you through one of the sponsors. Or contact Patrick G and im sure he will set you up with some nice specs.

ok ... my nitrous engine is fully forged and has a ms4 cam with heads and prc springs .. being cheap is not it ..

was just looking for the largest cam to be able to run with stock springs .. if i have to ill get sumthing bigger ..

and actually im not sure what year the new motor is from .. picked it for cheap and just gonna put it together ..

since i already stated i have a ms4 i might wanna get the trex if im going to have to upgrade springs and push rods.. as long as i dnt have to fly cutt..

i might as well get the ls2 timing chain .. any other toughts ?

what about 224 or 228 size cam they all need double springs too ?

You dont need double springs for a 224 or 228 cam. Comp 918's are find for those cams. Most people get the double springs for insurance and are usually overkill.

you do not need a Trex size cam to make 400rwhp.
If you want to be fast in the 1/8th, you'll need lots of trq, big cams will not give you that. You need the "right" cam with the mods you plan on.

I would use a set of duals for durability, like PP "gold"
You'll need pushrods, timing chain etc....
