I absolutely love my 224/224 .581/.581 114 cam. I'm running it under a set of stock cast 5.3 heads Bo White worked over for me with Patriot Gold Dual springs. Idles like stock with or without the A/C on & has a very nice powerband.

Not to mention the 224 cam is a time tested & proven cam. Many people have cut great times with it & not had to go big to get the E.T. they were looking for.

Tell us more about the heads. What size valves? what milling? Are they 918 comp springs? If so with the valve job what install height did they setup at? These are the things everyone is overlooking, but need to be addressed when building a big camshaft at the max lift of a spring. If you have good p/v you can run something like the Torquer 2 camshaft. It's proven to make 75+ flywheel horsepower gains just by bolting the cam in!

Just because someone announces they're cam makes crazy torque doesn't mean it actually does. I've dyno tested tons of custom grind test cams, TSP cams, and competitors camshafts in engine dyno applications. No matter how hard someone wants you to believe they make huge torque or hp over someone else's camshaft, it's usually just hype. I've dyno tested everything from Torquer 3 size to 240/244+ competitors camshafts & seen no more than 10hp variation. 10 hp going from 231/234 to a 240/244 isn't for everyone. That 10hp costs a lot of low end power that the customer might enjoy in a daily driver car.

Get us the info on your setup & we can better pick you a camshaft....
to be honest that would be your best bet! from personal experience i can tell you my setup works great but they are the experts so whatever they recomend is what id go with.

OKAY. Here is the deal. Like I said before. I was going to do a cam only setup but when I bought the car the guy also gave me a set of heads unassembled with a box of springs, cleaned used valves, and a set of red center bolt valve covers. And since I was going to do the cam and i have most the parts for the heads....i figure I might as well finish them and do them at the same time.

All I know about the heads is that they cam off a 99 LS1 and were sent to FL to be CNC'ed. I am having them cleaned, checked out, and flowed at Hatfeild Racing this week to get the numbers and find out if they are milled. The box of springs he gave me are the brown 1.25 springs rated for .600 lift. They are brand new still in the box. The valves are nearly perfect but used. So basically I need to find a cam that will work well with what I have in front of me. I have no reason to buy differnt springs when I didn't plan on doin this in the first place.

Back to my Orig. question. What is the most aggressive cam that will work with this setup and score me some good low-mid range power to 6200rpms with a nice choppy sound to it? THanks guys!

Pretty much anything bigger than stock needs to go past 6200 including the 224 grinds. An OEM z06 cam with ZERO lope needs to go past there...

hit up someone like ed curtis for a custom cam, that would be your best bet. For what you want i would do something like a 220-224, or in that range. You wouldnt rev that thing more then 6500 and would give you the very good power in the low range.

Unfortuntaly it wont lope how you want it, but thats just the way it is. To get the lope you want you would need a cam in the 230's, and well for what you want you wouldnt like it.

I talked to comp and pushing the springs to the max isnt a good idea. They said 580-585max for lift. Any cams out there with a nice chop and decent power in that range?

They are the 1.25 brown springs rated for .600 lift. Looking to keep them...need cam under 595 lift that will still make a little power with my CNC heads and have a little chop to it.

Ditch those turds & pick up a set of Patriot Gold duals. I think the entire spring kit goes for like $255. And then you'll be good a little over .600" lift no problem even if you don't want a grind that big. Added protection & piece of mind.

Well it looks like I am just going to sell these springs and find a set capable of higher lift. I am a little surprised that none of the smaller cam guys on here with heads chimed in with their ideas and setups......hmmmmm.

You have been given numerous of cams to look at, but you sound like your confused about what a cam does. Many people have mentioned the 224 cam with the .581 lift and a 112 LSA. Thats a small cam with a nice chop to it. Then you were told to get a custom grind and talk to someone that can customize your cam, but your not listening bro! Im done with this thread!

IF I go with bigger springs I might as well go with the larger cam! I was only looking at the smaller ones because I wanted to make these springs work. 225 bucks is 225 bucks and seems wasted when I have a brand new set right in front of me. My 0.02.
