Default motor ticking bad!

My 00 Z28 LS1 is ticking really bad, it sounds like a lifter, but not sure why it would be ticking so loud, and why only one lifter. I thought it was low on oil, but it was full. any thing else that could cause the ticking? I'd rather have more of an idea before i start pulling the valve covers off.

thanks in advance

i have had the tick for like 8 months and its gettin a little worse. it turned out to be a spun bearing. so im gettin a rebuild. so, things that could cause a ticking noise...lifters, spark plug wire not all the way connected causing an arc, maybe an exhaust leak, spun bearing, bent pushrod. but ofcourse start with the easiest. when was the last time you changed your oil, and did you see any metal shavings. if it is copper shavings then you have a spun bearing.

Thats funny same here. I have a 112 comp cam not sure on duration or lift. It was in the car when I bought it. I installed Harland Sharp 1.8 ratio rocker arms and it still made a loud ticking. I know everthing is tight valvetrain wise. We both have 918 springs. I am guessing at this but it might be the lobe shape on the cam and how hard the valves are opening and closing. They are stiffer springs I believe so the pressure closing the valve would be greater. I really dont worry anymore. Im swapping cam and springs so hopefully it goes away. If not oh well. Hope maybe I helped answer your question

Check your exhuast I had a leak. It went away a lot . I just tightened the bolts on the header though. I probably need new gaskets.

the cam and springs were in it when i bought it as well, the exhaust ill have to check again. I just changed plugs and wires, so its not them, oil had no shavings when i changed it, so judging by you guys, it must be in the lifters or rockers, damn

well before you say its the lifters, i would pull the pushrods and roll them on a flat surface to see if they are bent. i meant to ask if you have had any over revs lately. my buddy did 2 back to back 3rd to 2nd shifts. we pulled his pushrods and he had 4 bent ones. haha. it was crazy. im not sure how experienced you are with pulling them, but they are very easy. just dont strip the rear driver side rocker arm bolt hole like i did, cuz then you would have to pull the head and get it tapped. lol. and thats not fun.

well me with the similar problem have trick flow chrome moly hardened rods and they are not bent! Ive recently checked. Everything was good. 22 ft pounds of torque on the roller rockers assembly grease on everything. I dont know. It makes the motor sound kind of shitty. I have also recently changed my oil and no shavings. The mystery remains.

I did not pic out the rods. The guy before me said it had about $3500 in parts and labor done to the engine. Maybe exhuast was installed in that price too. I didnt really understand that calculator. So the rods are suppossed to be shorter than stock. I will pull them and check the length. That could be the problem. Are the intake and exhuast the same size rod. How would that sound come from a pushrod being a little off maybe? I dont know thats why im asking. Thanks for the help.

I'd get it checked out before it gets costly and you break some internals... I am a perfect example of that... but bright side is I am getting a a LQ9 6.0

Did it start ticking all at once or has it ticked, stopped, ticked, stopped, and now it just won't stop?
Pull your vlv covers and roll the motor checking the rockers/pushrods with the valves in the closed position. You may have had a lifter losing prime on you over time and now it's wiped a little off the lobe of your came.

how loud is it....does it affect performance

just a guess but if its none of the other things you valves might be kissing the top of your piston

you also said you installed 1.8 ratio rockers which could make your valves kiss depending on the cam

Im on the bandwagon also... Cam 224 228 .581 .588 114 comp 918 spring and rods...In it when I bought the car and it ticking a bit....took it to speed inc and got some stuff done. They didnt seem to worried about it, new header gasket and tightened then down and it when away a decent amount. Now its slightly more a knock and its a bit louder....It is loudest at 1600rpm then isnt as loud, but is still there. It put down 350 with it ticking and I have sprayed it at the track and ran a 12.2 with the noise, but it does seem to be getting worse. Im gona take it somewhere and have a builder that knows more than me check it out. It doesnt effect perforamce...or it doesnt seem like it.

I talked to a technician and he said not to worry. A lot of motors knock with cams in them. My cam is not big enough for my valves to be hitting. I am going back to stock and installing a trv3 camshaft and dual valve springs maybe patriots. So we will see if it still does it. I was thinking the lifters but I dont know. I dont think it has affected horsepower. It runs like a bat out of hell.

my motor is a 98, and its fairly quiet, then i put some lpe cncd heads and a gmpp asa cam with patriot duals and it got a bit louder, small ticking, so i think it also has to do with what kind of valvetrain u have

it hasn'r really seemed to affect performance, but once it hits like 1500 rpms, it gets really loud, and its constant too, not on and off.
