When I thru the timing chain the crank and cam went out of sync I know how to set up the timing marks my question is on older cars you lined up the gears and dropped in a distributer and you worried about the dist. being 180 outnow with distributerless ign how will I know if ign timing is 180 off? I luv the power you can make with the newer cars somethings I just dont understand yet.

Thats a VERY good question. I lined up the dots [before] disassembly and then made sure I did not rotate the crank after that. We both know that the crank gear turns 2 times for every 1 turn of the cam gear (the cam gear is twice as big).

In your case, you have a 50/50 shot at getting it right, since you don't have any idea if it's ok or the crank gear is 180 degrees off.

Since you have a cam position sensor and a crank position sensor, it certainly could be right on the money or 180 degrees out if you just line up the dots.

I am sorry I can't help you. I wish I could. Maybe my post will bring a renewed interset in your problem.

Why they printed the "I" in Iwis a "J" is beyond my understanding.

The Rollmaster timing set uses a gear set made by ROMAC/Rollmaster in Australia and the chain from Germany. Rollmaster does not manufacture chain....

 

Why such a price difference then

 

About 14 months ago I ordered my single non-adjustable Rollmaster timing set from Australia. Price was about $66 delivered.

BTW, the chain's side links looked to be thicker than the stock GM/Renold chain.

The "JWIS" or "IWIS", (or whatever you want to call them) single chains have to be all the same.

There are not 2 different versions of this single chain.

as long as u lined it up dot to dot I don't think it mattesr if you're 180* off... the crank knows where it's at and the cam knows where it's at (crank and cam position sensors) so I imagine the PCM can figure out everything (since it's software and not hardware like a distributor, software is much "smarter")....

I know when I did my cam install I was worried about this (I lost track of where the cam and crank were positioned so just did it dot to dot) but fired her up anyways (after thinkin about it decided it's prolly all good)

 

If you line it up dot-to-dot (crank at 12:00 and cam at 6:00), there is no way to be 180 degrees off. The only way to do that is put both dots at 12:00.

Yea I read where its impossible to get an LS1 or derivitave engines 180. The computer takes notice of this when you turn the ignition to the on position.
