Default lq4 junkyard price

the local junkyard has an lq4 long block for sale for $200. it has 317 heads on but they can't tell me what it was off of nor the year. i did pull the heads to confirm the dished pistons and quickly check if the bores were obviously messed up any. they thought it might originally have had a knock but are unsure. so, is this a good deal (figured i could sell the heads since i already have a set). what should i be looking for to keep from getting screwed on this deal?

if it has a knock get your self some new rear bearings, with soime arp rod bolts. possibly hone it out if there are any small/ light scuffs on the walls then put some new rings on her and let her roll...

Me and a buddy of mine was just talking about this for a turbo project for his nova. You buy it for 200 and I will buy it for 400 off of you so you have 200 to buy another if you wish.

I got an 02 LQ4 longblock on ebay for $200. Ended up having a spun bearing (ate about 1/4" of the crank) but I only needed the block and it's practically new. Thing had a MAJOR oil leak and was dirty, but after disassembling, I'm able to use the covers and the block, for a whopping $200. I'd get it man. Knock or not, the block is worth more than $200 just by itself, let alone the heads!

thx. i picked it up and will disassemble next week so i can take it to a shop for inspection. probably go get the other one too and sell it. it was marked j231 so i guess its an oct 23 2001 block. cylinders look good, may get by with a hone only. no idea yet on the heads or crank journals.

Shoot, that's great news man! Never hurts to have a spare *wink* You could use a junk block as garage art (chair) too ya know. Wish my house had a mailbox (rather than po box style boxes at the end of the street) so I could've used a couple junk ls1 cranks to mount the box on!

Where is the date code located on these blocks? Somewhere on the front??

I can get an LQ4 (see sig where it will end up into) from an 05 Chevy Van..it has around 60K miles on it...intake to pan minus front accessories and electronics for $750...
Does the price sound fair? Thats their price for a guy walking off the street..
If I can get a buddy that owns a shop that deals with them, I wonder how much they will knock off?

Im doing a budget swap, so I just want to drop the motor in...all I want to do is, LS6 or LS2 intake, cam swap TR224?? or similar (with new timing chain, new oil pump(?), hardened pushrods and appropriate valve springs), headers and full exhaust, along with a manual transmission....

i looked at 2 long blocks earlier this week, 1 off a 2003 sub and another off a 02 pickup, both with 102k. yard wanted 1250! for either. another yard wanted 1500 for their low mile long block. i would say 750 sounds reasonable.

there is a link i found on this site that shows the date code location. it is cast on the passenger side front of the block that runs at a 45 degree angle right by the head.

**edit - found the link
