Default soon to be new Z06 owner

I am currently in the process of selling my 2000 Camaro SS and purchasing a 2007 Corvette Z06. It has 8k miles on it.

I was wondering what mods would be best to start with, my first wave of mods if you will, will have a budget of around $3k, this car has a K&N air intake but thats it. I figure exhaust and headers, Kooks and Borlas, and idk what else. As for the other waves i want to keep it reliable and able to be my DD. It probably wont be, but it gives me comfort of mind if i need it to be. So any suggestions?

If you aren't doing heads/cam or other big power adders, don't waste your money on exhaust work. Minimal power gains for lots'a cash.

To do mods:

K&N, 160 stat, custom dyno tune, ported TB & intake manifold.

exhaust work isnt a waste.. it will net some gains.. i would do long tube headers, and a true dual exhaust.. if you gain 10hp thats better than nothing, and when you decide to open up the engine you already have the exhaust to back it up! the rest of the mods mentioned are fine also and i would also perform.. but dont let the exhaust part scare ya.. even if ya dont gain gobs of power from it you will get a nasty **** sound.. plus future mods will thank you. and yes you will get gains with the longtubes and exhaust..

good luck with your new vette

plus i bet with the lt, and exhaust opened up i bet you net about 20whp gain.

Eventually I will do heads and cam and so forth. I just want to pay down the car a little before i do. Trying to play it safe for now. But I have seen 4-5 Z06 blow their rear end at the track. So how weak is the rear end in those? Would buying a 12 bolt or at least some axles be justified?

My buddy and I put on two different brands of headers (supposedly the two best), with X pipes, retuned and dyno'd them. Mine gained 4 rwhp peak, and 12 ft lbs of midrange torque. His gained 2 rwhp peak, and 14 ft lbs of midrange torque. Check out the costs and decide if it's worth it. The stock manifolds aren't logs, they are individual primaries with a very nice (but short) collector.
As far as the diff, it's pretty strong, it's the halfshafts that go, mainly if you get wheelhop and don't get off the throttle. Sometimes when they go they take the diff (and sometimes the tranny) with them.

Congrats brother, don't look back! I went from a 99Z28 to my C5 and it was day and night, now being in a Z... the world is a perfect place. I've had mine a few weeks now and am in the same boat with the mods. So far I've ordered a LG Super Pro kit, Halltech, Katech Torquer, and tomorrow I'm ordering PRC heads. For 2-3k, I would say, do the heads and cam!!! Then again, once you get into it, you might decide it's fast enough for the meanwhile and just get some headers.

Unless you want crazy dyno numbers, or a beast on the street, you won't need much mods. Drive it 2-3 mos., research some bolt-on mods, talk with builders. Then decide what 3K will get you-you'll be surprised.

It will be a few more months before i do it. I will have a hefty enough down payment that my payments wont be much and my insurance quote came back as 180 a month. Gave her the vin and everything. The last two quotes i have had the same lady run came back less than what she quoted me after i got the car and started paying it. This is gonna be a several month process. I will have to sell my car and build a little more savings before i can actually jump at the opportunity, but it will be coming.
