Riding with balancer bolt loose

Default Riding with balancer bolt loose

I bought an envoy Denali last year and have taken several trips to Texas from Louisiana. I developed an oil leak in the front main seal after running an extra quart of oil for three months then going back to six quarts after updating the valve cover. I got down to the balancer bolt and put my socket on it and it wasn't even tight at all. Just shaking around. I had been beating on this truck after tuning it and having fun and I'm lucky the balancer never came off. Thank you Lord. Someone did lifters at one point because the timing cover gasket is aftermarket. They just threw everything back together.

Also wanted to ask is it ok to drive. I could only get about 100lbs on the arp bolt

You really should have the 240ft lbs on it ideally. Just keep a close eye on it at 100.

Take it out and put loctite on the bolt--replace.

If you dont get enough torque on the bolt the belt tension can rotate the pulley on the crank and loosen the bolt ( back it out when the crank rotates ) . In my opinion since the balancer/crank has some wear from spinning I would pin it to ensure it will never move again .

Questions is how we learn .

There is a kit that when the balancer is installed you drill the crank and balancer at the same time and put a pin in it to keep it from rotating . Do a google search ls crank pin kit , there is several company's making it now . It seems to be a problem with the ls engine on performance engines . Also a must for any belt driven power adder .
