Is there much of a difference with performance coil packs

Default Is there much of a difference with performance coil packs

I'm gonna change mine since I'm giving it a tune up and was thinking about the performance ones. Is there a difference really and would I need to adjust anything

As long as they are in good shape I think you'd likely have to spend a LOT to beat the stock ones.. (Or the right stock ones.. )

Are you referring to the IGN1a? If so, im also interested in them for a nice winter mod.

Ive been saying I’m going to get a set of these for the last 3-4 years…not sure why I haven’t yet. I can see them being an upgrade for the max-effort guys.

I was under the impression the LS1 had the bottom of the rung coil pack. The truck was better, the LS3 even better, and there's that truck pack with the external heat sink (Mitsubishi?). Pretty much anything was an upgrade from an F-body. And the other GM coils were quite good.

It's been 10 years since I looked into this so I don't remember a lot of the details.

Forced Induction high Boost applications is where the major Differences are seen vs the ole trusty truck coils

interesting for educational purposes why is that? Is it due to dewel timing? Hotter spark?

"Most users report an18HP increase with a 500 HP engine, this is WHP.
They state better Gas Mileage, better throttle responce.

The coil dwell should be increased, this is easy with the Holley ECU.
SPG increased to .060"

This is what I heard!

Very interesting to hear a 500 hp engine may make more power and have better throttle response due to coils. I wonder if anyone has any dyno graphs with ls engines showing this

Default Stronger Spark Energy = MPG increase

There are but a few changes you can make to your engine that can save money, as in a MPG increase, and thus pay for themselves.
The IGN-1A coil will output 280 mJ of Spark Energy @ 8 ms Coil Dwell
This is four times the energy of a "580", "585" Delphi Coil @ 70 ish mJ.

A SPG of .060" will allow for an Arc Duration of almost 3 micro seconds.
This LONG spark is very good for lower RPM engine operation.

How much difference are these (Ign-1a) when compared to the LS3 Square coil that came out in like 2009? Are these more of a boost motor item than NA?

Default GEN IV Coil

I too make a GEN-IV coil, wicked up by 10% and a heat sink over the IGBT.
Coil cost is the same, output is 87 mJ @ 4.5 ms Dwell.

They are sold as a direct replacement for use on N/A engines.

Many here state a GM coil is FINE when the SPG is reduced to .018"-.022"
The IGN-1A SPG should be .045"- .060" depending on MAP.

NOT MANY speak about Arc Duration, the MOST important item after a spark has happened.

As noted, the avg guy na Won't see a huge jump in Hp. But Major Boost applications Will.

I've compared oem to msd coils back to back and could not tell any difference at all on the street...
