Default LS7 issue..

Hi,

I have a wet sump crate LS7. Recently did the heads using LME Brodix.

Just went for a short drive and had a smell through vents on hot day.

Found catch can cap appears to have burst off? I don't know much of anything about pcv system, but I believe the heads vent was blocked off instead of adding a steam kit.

Possible you've got too much crankcase pressure. How is the PCV system set up? On my car I have 10AN lines off each valve cover to a vented catch can and the intake and throttle body is capped off.

The valley cover hose routes to Inlet of the can at the top. Its an Elite engineering standard 2 hose can w/ separator.

The PCV on the MSD intake routes to Side of the Can. The Clean side separator then routes from the valve cover to the cold air intake

Maybe you did not put all the way in when you did heads and it popped off. I see the catch can. Is that the hose that goes from valve cover to the air bridge. The catch can if only a 2 hose model one should go to the vacuum source (intake manifold) and a dirty source a pcv valve or a restricted orifice hole. The restricted orifice is only .100 or so of a hole so you can not just put in valve cover unless the valve cover has a restrictor in it. Most LS7 use a valley cover tube which has a restrictor in it. The hose in your photo is an unrestriced valve cover unit and should run to the air bridge or an open to out side port.

Photo of hose barb with restrictor.

The Valley hose is connected to the top hose of the can. The MSD intake PCV inlet then is routed to the side of the can.
The separator as mentioned is on the passenger valve cover and runs to the cold air intake.

How else could it be vented? Or what is wrong with current setup?
Spoiler!

The lower port on the elite can needs to go to the vacuum intake manifold source. The top port goes to the valley cover. Vacuum draws the oily air down from the top of the can.

You have it set up just like an LS2 would be but have a sealed catch can in between and nothing wrong with doing it that way. The LS2 & LS6 valley covers have built in pcv on the valley covers where the LS7 valley cover does not. The drivers side LS7 valve cover has an orifice tube on the back of the cover that would generally run to the intake mainfold and this could be connected to the sealed can and then from the can to the intake manifold then you'd cap off the port on the valley cover. The port on the passenger cover should run to the throttle body or cold air intake tube. Congratulations! You have a properly set up positive crankcase ventilation system.

So, you are saying it doesn't require a vent?

What caused the cap to busrst off like it seems to have done? Isn't that excess crankcase pressure?

What do you mean by a vent? Are you talking about something like this?

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/v...xoCz_AQAvD_BwE

Cap popping off and dipstick being pushed out of its tube are indicators of excessive crankcase pressure. I would think a properly setup PCV system would have adequate circulation and less crankcase pressure.I see that you using the oil fill cap as the port for the line going to the air intake tube is there not a port on the valve cover right there? If so why not use that and just put an oil fill cap back on there?
