Default Thoughts on 408 build and Header choice!!!

Hey guys, I am building a 408 using an iron block with ported L92 heads and L-76 intake with 14:1 CR and will be using a cam with a max lift around .650 behind it will be a 4L60e so you know where this is headed.(Not a SUPER high-winding motor) however I will be spinning it to around 6800. The RPM range is important to my question as you will see. I was seriously thinking of nothing else for my header choice but Kooks in the full race 1 7/8 stepped to 2' for my build at around $800. Then last night I came across the edelbrock stainless stepped headers for half the price but come in stepped 1 3/4' to 1 7/8' which would leave me with more money to spend elsewhere. The question is....how much power-wise would I be giving up due to the "slight" size difference in the 2 different headers? I will not be using any y pipe as I am going with a true 3 "dual over the rear axel. I know the edelbrocks would make more torque down low then the Kooks would make more power up top but given my rpm goals and the costs what do you guys think?, what are these headers from edelbrock like? Any input would be appreciated! Thanks in advance guys! BTW I am running E-85 fuel. I think my high compression will help with the exhaust excavation. Thoughts on what YOUR header choice for my combo would be?

Buy what you really want. If you settle for the cheaper ones and miss your goal HP #'s you will be kicking yourself later. Go ahead and get the kooks and be done with it. good luck

are you sure that high of a c/r will work on e85 and even a monster cam ? alot of people seem to like the 1 7/8 headers with the l92 setup.

Yes, cylinder pressures are still VERY resonable! And it burns SOOO cool!

A 4L60E? Save yourself the time and money now and go with a TH350 or TH400.

With a 4ljunkie tranny in that car it will never see it's full potential, so with that being said... the header choice won't matter a ton.

If you're willing to put a tranny in the car that is worth while for a race car (because with 14 to 1 compression I don't care e85 or not you will not be driving that every day, probably not on the street at all) then spend the $ and go 1 7/8 stepped to 2 in, and a couple 3/5 inch mufflers off the end of the headers and that's all you need. Save ya 50 lbs of exhaust, and make way more power.

With that compression, you're gonna make power to 7500 at least, my 13 to 1 402 makes power to 7400 no problem, you should be planning on the same or more.

i posted in your other thread.. don't know where it went

I switched from 1 3/4 to the kooks 17/8 to 2 inch. Picked up a ton of power, no loss of low end. Well worth it.

here is a comparison of my kooks vs pacesetters. I strongly advise you go with the bigger stepped kooks.

Well I may the exception to the rule, but my car loves the non-stepped Kooks and the 4L60E has over 192 documented hard passes on it. I should have had it freshened up thi past winter, but I had too much going on at the time.

The stepped Kooks my be worth something extra on our car though. I put down 538/500 with a flatened drivers side header from an couple of unexpected wheels stands. It didn't seem to hurt us any. The car ran 9.9s at 133.5 on E85 pump gas from HEB. We are only running 11.6:1 static compression and max of 27* of timing.

Keep us updated on your choice and results man!
