Default L92/L76 and cam questions

i have a 72 cutlass currently its an olds 455, 700r4, 3 73 posi, 275/60/15s m/t et radials setup with true dual 2.5" exhaust. Im just curious about what kind of issues i should really be on the look out for if i swap in a ls2 engine. From what i gather i will need to relocate the alternator and use some engine mount relocation mounts from hooker. Then move my motor mounts up from there olds position to, this hurts to say as an olds loyalist, the chevy engine position. Spend around 450 to get the stock harness and ecu reworked to be a standalone unit and get a new torque converter that has the mounting style needed to bolt up to the ls2.

Also what kind of power am i looking at if i do the l92/l76 topend on the ls2 stock block. What about that with decent street cam, whats the biggest lift i can run with the stock springs.

i have this posted in hybrid as well, but wanted to post here mainly for the performance gain questions, wasnt sure that hybrid section was very performance oriented

dont bother with stock springs, just get some good dual springs and you can put in a .600 lift cam and get some decent power from that combo, make sure you get a cam for the l92's though, they require a diff cam from other ls engines due to the poor ex flow compared to the intake flow

coming from a totally obsolete and off brand engine background, what kind of numbers would you consider "decent power". trying to find out what these things are capable of. Im not a stranger to the shitty exhaust ports, olds is the same way. Given the crappy exhaust flow are the l92s a worthy investment for a budget build.

l92's are a gread head to use on a budget build, the exhaust ports dont flow bad its just the intake ports flow great so there is a pretty big split that can be worked around with the correct cam.You can easily get over 450 rwhp with that setup

sounds like these things make the power im wanting. It will be nice to lay down 450+rwh and know i have alot room to expand on it. Need some people to chime in on some details with regards to powersteering and other minor details still before i decide to do this thing. If i do it i'll definitely be going to be purchasing a cam and springs from you. could you give me a price on that. As far as cam specs this car isnt driven much and in all reality im willing to run the biggest cam these heads and a stock vette fuel system can support, ill up the stall converter accordingly

edelbrock just came out with a nice set of swap mounts, headers, and full dual exhaust from headers to bumper to swap an LSx engine into the 68-72 a-body's. Parts look real nice. maybe cheaper than hooker.

It would be sweet to get an LSx block and build a 455 cube setup, making well over 500 horses.

i checked the part numbers on summits website awhile back and the headers were around 550 i think with the ti tech coating and the mounts were like 70 bucks i think.

the whole kit is just over a grand i think.

The headers are nice, 1 3/4 stepped to 1 7/8 with 3in collectors i believe.

Do a lot of pricing before you leap. Installing an LSX engine is a whole lot more than just getting motor mounts and bolting it in. If someone else is doing the swap, make sure you get a price for the complete turnkey job. The cost of little things can eat you alive.

If you are using the air conditioning, you will most likely have to move the compressor or box the frame. The LSX is pretty wide with accessories and most of the old cars are pretty narrow in the frame up front.

yea, im in touch with someone doing a swap into there 71 cutlass, same everything as the 72 like i have. Im not planning on running ac, just alternator, powersteering, and the waterpump. It looks right now like it should be just a matter of swapping mounts and then getting the harness to work as a standalone type deal, as well as swappin in a fuel system for fuel injection
