distributor questions
im just trying to be different and looking into running a distributor on a 408. i already have a slew of sbc and sbf parts laying around, distributors, msd digital 7, various msd coils etc.
im really just looking for some input on who is using one in a race application.
i was wondering how the cam gear holds up? anyone sheer those bolts yet?
also do i really need the msd trigger converter? can i just use the pickup in the distributor? (msd pro billet) im figuring the trigger converter will give me more accuracy but im not sure since i have heard there are problems associated with it. or should i just use msd crank trigger?
any info i can get would be great, im really looking to see how there running, whos running it and how much power their pushing with it.
mind you im building a 408 and im going to WHACK THE CRAP OUT OF IT on spray.....hopefully turbo in the future
again please dont try to convert me to EFI and i really have no intentions on using the msd 6010/6012 it does not have all the features i need to shoot this thing to the MOON
hope this helps
cheers dave

are you using the magnetic pickup in the distributor or the trigger converter?
what ignition are you running? about how much further out does the water pump stick out with those spacers?....does the GM package even come with the WP spacers?

yes I'm using a SBC cranktrigger that I had to fab some mounts for use with the LSX.....also no WP spacers are included. You can get them from Wegner for about $30 if I remember right. Also I had to ditch my factory fans with this setup...they are a little too thick with the Afco radiator and the WP spacers. As far as ignition, I'm currently using an MSD digital 6 box. If you have any more q's just shout.

Also why not just use the ford style distibutor with the gmpp front cover ?
Wouldn`t that be easier ?
I`m just doing a mild biuld for street with a carb.
I`m going to use the L92 heads and with a mild hyd. roller cam.... will my stock pistons need to be fly cut ??
Also i read that i need to change the reluctor wheel ??? Why ???
Thanks for the info and part numbers.

The intake valve is 2.16, you better clay it to be safe. Also i read that i need to change the reluctor wheel ??? Why ??? You don't even need a reluctor wheel at all...Thanks for the info and part numbers.
than mine. I would like to have that MSD. Can you give me MSD Part # Dist.?Thanks for input.

You can use the distributor to trigger your MSD box but really why would you want to. The reluctor wheel is a lot more accurate than the distributor.
I am going to test it 3 ways on the dyno.
MSD Trigger
MSD Magnet Crank Trigger
MSD Distributor
The ideal setup IMHO is a MSD converter with a reluctor wheel then a MSD 7531 and a drop in race MSD ford distributor. Use the fiber optic sensor on #1 so you can tune each cylinder.
