Default opinions for 402 head choice

ive decided on a 402 since i got a ls2 block for dirt cheap

car will be a 100% street car with maybe 1-3 track passes a year, im hopeing to make around 525whp

im down to decideing on my pistons cam and heads

i'd like to run a ported fast 92 on it, best place to get a ported one at?

heads i was looking into a set of afr's ive seen the 205's are pretty good on 402's would the 225's be better tho? what non super expensive rocker arms would you recommend

compression ratio? i was thinking 11.5:1 would be 93 pump safe?

now what kind of pistons would you recommend flat tops with valve reliefs ect?

i was also thinking of running a u/d pulley

thanks in advance

Contact Tony Mamo at AFR.

The 205's have put out great results on 402 motors. I run 225's with additional work by Tony. Whatever brand you go with; don't skimp on cylinder heads. They are the key to making big power on n/a cars.

I run 11.8 on pump gas without a problem.

now what kind of pistons would you recommend flat tops with valve reliefs ect? I've used both Wiseco and Diamond pistons (2 cc valve reliefs) with good results. In my case the Wiseco pistons are slightly lighter.

i was also thinking of running a u/d pulley
I run an ASP pulley with no problems.

We are offering ported FAST 92/with our 92mm billet tb. Ported by Jantzer performance.
I also have AFR's on sale and can come up with a package deal for you for cam heads and intake.

You dont need after market rockers with AFR's, I would just have your stockers rebuilt by Harlan Sharp. The HS mod fixes the only issue with them. I'd go with the 225's over the 205's, the price is close enough anyway and Like I said I have them on sale

TFS 225's or AFR 225s milled to 61 or 59cc's with a tony mamo or Vengeance racing ported fast. And to seal the deal talk with Pat G about your power goals and driveablity and have him spec you a cam based on your combo. Thats me and I'd feel safe at 11.3 but then again I can afford to blow a motor right now. Good luck bro.

some people have had good results with ported AFR 205s on a 402. thats my setup, but i havent got good numbers yet due to a bad trans and a loss of compression. i put down 460/440, but the trans took a big dump shortly after (wouldnt stay locked on the dyno either), and then i found out that all 8 top rings werent sealed. hopefully once i get it running again ill have new, better numbers.

now, if i hadnt bought the ported 205s before, i either would have gotten the 225 AFRs or maybe a set of worked over L92s

Check the dyno section here. There's a sticky with multiple 402-408 builds and results. I would howver suggest you focus on the overall results rather than picking a dyno number target. The later has way too many variables to be really meaningful.

I personally would go with AFR 205's. Seen a M6 C5 with a mild cammed 402 break into the 10's on DR's and those heads. That's actually the setup I'm doing for my goat.

id got 225's save some cash and use the stock rockers, nice cam and then he can just get rockers,u/d pulley and a ewp down the road if he chose to and that'd still give him a lil bit to gain.

should be easily over 500whp with a ported fast intake

You'll need springs and valves, but you can get valves for $240 and springs for $250. You'll have a 230cc after market casting with a thick deck, solid rocker pad, 1/2 inch pushrod holes, etc... for $1600. That's about the same as you'd be able to get a set of stock ported castings for.
Richard @ WCCH also carries them and a bunch of other items. He should be coming out with something new / really nice in the next few months from what I understand.

Yes to the intake Jesel's on the rocker. Big rpms requires a stable rocker system. The offset pattern provides just that.

I carry Richards heads , as well as run them on my personal cars Richards is great guy to talk to and very helpful as well give him a call.

Here is a good thread about AFR 205's...https://ls1tech.com/forums/dynamomet...big-power.html
Several more threads with other head result in the dyno section.

Good luck with your build!
