Default Burning Oil.... lots. Please help

Hey guys,

My car is burning alot of oil. Like I would say roundabout 1 1/2 quarts a week. I mean, when I go through a drive-through, you can see the blueish cloud form up behind my car visibly. This problem confuses me, for a couple of reasons. First my car has 60.5K miles on it, it has patriot stg II 5.3 heads that are probably about 15K old, and it has no PCV system. So there is no pcv valve that is bad, and thats the cause. My PCV system consists of a valve cover breather (Speed Inc) on the passenger side valve cover, and the crossover in the back that connects the two valve covers. So this is why Im confused. I mean, you wouldnt think my rings would be bad with that low of miles. I mean Im not ruling it out, but just saying. And you wouldnt think my valve seals would be bad either with recent heads. Anyways, I was hoping one of you guys might know some insight into my problem. This is really getting me alot of negative attention if you know what I mean. Please help me out. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Also, it obviously does give a decently big puff of smoke out of the pipes when I first start it, and it sits there and smokes out at idle at a stoplight. Normal driving, lets say 2000rpm 40-50ish mph, you cant really tell its smoking, and then of course at full WOT it leaves a VERY healthy trail behind the car. If that helps any of you out. Maybe a really bad valve seal problem? Thanks guys,

Bad valve seals are my first guess. A tell tale sign of bad valve seals is when you leave a "healthy" trail of bluish colored smoke when you hit the pedal from a 40-50mph roll.

Do a leakdown check.

Valve stem seals
compression/leak down test
install a PCV system

definitely put a PVC system in dont know why people take them out they are very beneficial to the life of the engine.

Positive Crankcase Ventilation system is very important to sucking up harmful fumes that are produced inside the engine (that can be corrosive in the long run) and burning them up in the cylinders.

You MUST have a PCV system on these vehicles if they are a high-mileage street vehicle.

leak down test will not tell you if the valve seals are leaking. i would do it tho to rule out the rings. i assume the vehicle is naturally aspirated so if leak down test shows normal results then its gotta be valve seals.

Do the rocker bolts protrude into the intake port of the head?? If so, those bolts need to be sealed really well.

Default Have you figured this out yet?

Have you done a leak down test yet?

I'm no LS specialist but it really sounds like you're burning a ton of oil and (by your description of the problem) I'd start looking at rings.

The big puff of blue smoke at startup is a sign of bad valve guides/seals but I bet a trashed ring(s) might do the same thing.

Please let us know what you find .

Thank goodness the price of oil has gone down 50% in the last few months.

You could have cracked rings, bad valve seals or a screwed up PVC system. I would also check your vaccum at idle. should be 17 - 20.

If it belches oil on startup then that's most likely valvestem seals. As the car sits oil leaks down the seal into the combustion chamber. So when you start it POOF... blue smoke.

Also, like others have said... do the rocker arm bolts protrude into the intake port? Some ported heads have this issue and you must seal the bolts with teflon sealer. Otherwise oil runs down the bolt threads into the combustion chamber.

Install a PCV system... there's no reason not to have one on a street car you drive a bunch.

My 1999 ls-1 has procharger supercharger 7.5psi & 51000miles on engine, 15000miles on s/c. Use royal purple and z-max but it uses about 1 qt oil per 2000miles. Is it burning oil? Vacuum on boost gauge at idle is 24psi. Whats going on with this engine? Thanks. Gene.
