Default 408 build questions...

Im about to pull the trigger on a new motor build..car is a full weight 6speed. 3.90 gears out back. 50/50 street strip car.I am going with a 408 but am unsure on heads and intake. my goals are 500+rwhp with a mild cam. most likely upper 23x duration. I will also be spraying a dp 200-300 when i go to track to put up some good numbers. Will I be able to attain my goal of 500rwhp with ported l92 heads and ported l76 intake? I understand aftermarket castings such as AFR an TFS 225 will give me more power but the performance gains seen seem to be minimal when u look at the extra price. also is there any other engine builders that offer ported l92s besides texas speed? sorry for the long post

Bang for teh buck, almost impossible to touch the L92's. And yes, you can make that much power rather easily. I went by my machine shop today to drop off some more money for my motor, and they had a 408 on teh dyno. 11:1 on pump gas, Patriots, not sure on he cam, and it made 602 HP(flywheel). I do know it was a hydraulic cam though, and did not sound that nasty, pretty tame. These Gen III/IV just make stupid power

tfs will make the most power, with a fast 92 and then you can expect over 520rwhp!

Will TFS 215's work with a 408? I'm asking because I'm planning a 408 build later and don't want to buy another set of heads. They are dammed pricey! Lol

For max power I personally would install our new PRC 237cc heads. That being said for budget the ported L92 heads are really hard to beat. You can get them setup with a stainless valve for the nitrous & still be under $1500 or so. If money was not a concern than the PRC 237 head will make big power & fit with a cathedral style intake.

People will make a million suggestions, look at combos that work and go from there. If you want to keep it simple, I like the LS7 manifold based stuff as its the best for what it can do with simple packaging. Can feed 600+ rwhp NA in a 6 speed, weve made 530 in a TH400 on mustang dyno.

Plenty enough to get you in trouble

i've heard that too, with a 300+shot, stock castings will start to lift. i was advised to go with TFS heads over LS3/L92 heads, because i plan to shoot 350+
