Sorry, it doesn't work that way....if you break a spring, it's going to wreck something regardless of the pushrod. If you push a borderline pushrod to it's limits though, IT'S flexability can induce valve float which ALWAYS ends badly. Be smart, upgrade the pushrods.
I agree it's going to wreck something, but I rather wreck a head than shove a valve thru the piston.
Yes, you could get valve float if you're running a large cam and big spring pressure, but I am not in this category. If I were doing this, I would agree with you to run hardend push rods.
I guess we all have are own school of thought on the matter. A lot depends on how and what were going to do, each situation is different.
