Default dampner

hey just curious to see what kind of dampner is best to use on a lsx/408/twin turbo set up. Ati seems to be the choice of most. Any input is appreciated. The search really didn't give me the answers I was looking for. Thanks Chris

I went with the ATI. I did a lot of research on the web and talked to alot of builders and the large majority suggest the ATI for these engines. Some have suggested that using an inferior damper is related to timing chain failures on the ls engines. One builder I spoke to said that he has used SLP dampers with no problems. If your using FI I would deffinitely go with the ATI.

How much$$$, do you only have one? What about standard with no a/c, with a race durometer?

I went through this EXACT thing over the last 2 weeks. I ended up CALLING ATI, and speaking with a tech. 99blanco has very good prices, and I almost went with him. However, after speaking with ATI and I what I needed to do, I had to have a special Dampner made. Here is what I wanted:

25% Underdrive. Aluminum shell, steel hub, NO AC with the good (60 Durometer) rubber

I ended up with 10% underdrive(after talking with tech and since this car will see street duty, he thinks is a better option than 25%), aluminum shell, steel hub, NO AC and 60 durometer. The part number for that balancer is 917277-60 or you can also use part # 917277-66. If you use just #917277, that will get you everything lisyed above, but with 40 durometer, which is not good for race use. ATI pretty much has any and everything that you may want:

With AC or not. Dry Sump or wet sump. OEM, 10%, 25% UD. Aluminum. Steel. Aluminum AND steel. Rebuildable. Timing marks 360*. And GREAT customer service.

With a part number, you might be able to get a balancer through a sponsor that carries ATI, like 99blancoSS. I was under the gun, so I pulled the trigger and bought straight from ATI. I may have paid a little more than if I bought from 99blancoSS, as I think 99blancoSS has very good pricing, escpecially when you add in his special with wires and plugs. It was just, I was on the phone with the tech for 20 minutes talking balanceers, I needed one quickly, and he offered to overnight it to me. So, I jumped. Also, with this part number I listed above they do NOT stock. they have to make it. They take # 917277 and instead of adding the regular 40 durometer, they put in the 60.

Hope this helps. I personally, if you are not under time restraints, get a ATI from a sponsor (99blancoSS has a special going on right now, did I mention that already with an ATI balancer, MSD wires and Plugs for a VERY GOOD PRICE)

Have to agree with GEN414 on this one.... buy the good damper! And I would not recommend the 25% underdrive, makes the damper too small in diameter, reduces it's effectiveness. With forded induction you will be making a LOT of torque which puts a lot of twist in the crank. Without a good damper, you are just asking for trouble.

PM's sent.

HTMtrSprt: Yes, there were a few reasons the tech said and suggested I go 10% and not 25%, and that was one of them (reason you said). That is why, while they DO offer the 25%, it is not typically readily available. In other words, they offer it just for those that feel that it will work, but don't recommend it. You can always pulley your accessory if you want to cut down on accessory speed if you still feel like you need to.

^ I have always been told the stock balancer was better than these 25% UD "low end" pulleys.
