Default setting up Patriot Gold Valvesprings: R U avail Thunder?

With the cam kit came retainers, dual gold springs, keepers, and a shim for underneath, i think it was plastic.

I placed the shim under the seal on an ls3/l92 head, tapped in the seal, and sent the installed valves and heads to a shop to get them put on. prescribed recipe, right?

well, they call back and say they are mic'ing 1.750 when installed height is 1.800.

the included shim is around 50-60 thou, but without the shim, the installer says these springs will gall the hell out of the spring pad.

what's the set-up?

Should we shim to total collapse minus 60 thou to prevent bind? I'm running right at 600 lift.

is there a problem with galling?

is the supplied ships necessarily needed?

bind height is 1.070 TO 1.090. add 600 = 1.690

leaves 60 thou for freeplay. that's minimumm acceptable.

but, why in the world would the kit have a minimum clearance setup right off the bat?

what have others done?

You want to be able to run as close to coilbind as possible, and .060" is a good rule of thumb.

Shims are not plastic.

When you setup .060" from coil bind you cant say you have 1.070-1.090 and just go off of that. You need to measure each spring individually on each spring. Meaning finding the actual coil bind height of the inner and the outter spring on each spring and measure and shim from there.
