I'm waiting to see what happens with the Direct Injection (DI) heads that GM prototyped back in late 2007 early 2008.
It was suppose to be the same chamber and runner layout as the L92, but with the injector nozzle sticking out into the combustion chamber (not mounted in the manifold).
The DI 4 cyl (Solstice GXP/Sky Redline SC 2.0L) and the Gen 5's DI V6 show good results. But neither chamber is designed for Swirl on the intake stroke (Quad valve setup).
The V8 heads (mainly the L92 and LS7 heads) with the offset intake promote Swirl on the air fuel to increase the mixture (which increases the percentage of fuel combusted).
I think the DI version of the L92/LS3 heads (if they are ever released) will be hard as hell to beat.
Another question to do with the DI setup.
What do you do with the injector locations on the standard L92/L76/LS3 manifold as the fuel rails and injectors should mount under the manifold for a DI setup?

It would not be cost effective to try DI on a non DI setup. Piston design is different for the most part, as well as them needing an injection pump (just like off a diesel) to make the fuel pressure go high enough. There would be no room anywhere on the manifold because the intake port takes up all that space. My conception of the idea would be just like a diesel is now with it straight in the top, or on the side of the head by the spark plug. Those are really the only feasible places. If they are in the top, then that means a different valve cover.
You would not use the same manifold either. Just like the change from carb to tbi to MPFI changed manifold design, so does the change from MPFI to DI.
Cost would add up very quickly on a car that was not normally set up for this.
