This is nothing new. It is exactly the same picture we look at every day. But this ENTIRE issue is being way overthought. Basically, that washer should be used on that balancer only because it has the place for it. It comes with the balancer unless you get it used. That is the end of the story.

There is no magical hoodoo that this washer does to a normal balancer without that groove that makes it necessary for use on all of them. It is just how that certain balancer is designed.

Well after reading alot on balancers, I see alot of guys saying that their balancers without the seal come out, come loose, spin out and more.
Some even take it to places where they get them drilled and pinned so they don't spin.

So what I have come to beleive is that the seal is there to keep it dry against the crank free of oil, so it dosent slip thats what I have come to beleive. Maybe the newer engine balancer are all gonna come with this seal.

All I wanted to know if the truck balancer used a seal or not.
That's all.

The problem with that is usually due to incorrect installation. I have seen this happen twice. Once on a vette (they have all sorts of problems with bolts backing out) and once more recent on an F body with an aftermarket underdrive balancer. I saw both of these in person. They both used the GM balancer bolt. Not that I am saying the GM bolt is the problem, but when they are not put on exactly like they are supposed to, these things happen.

Man, you are going to know everything about these when it's all said and done. You are certainly going to be the "GO TO" guy on these Gen IV swaps. Glad to hear you got the balancer issue fixed, and the EEC issue too!

.
Dead right that the seal helps keep the oil out to improve the grip of the shim/washer when it is compressed between balancer and crank sprocket.

Have had one sitting here as a spare for some time, was told it was diamond embedded so opened it up and took a look. It is very rough like sharp but fine wet and dry on both sides.

Introduced on LS2 Vett's to prevent that design balancer which is also used on G8 from coming loose.

Interesting.

Question, will the LS3 Damper work on an older Gen3 5.3?

I am looking into the possibility of running the LS3 damper on my 2000 5.3 along with an LS1 Corvette Alternator bracket. I just wanted to make sure itd line up with the front cover seal. I believe it should have the same offset as all other Vette Dampers as the aftermarket tensioners all look to be the same.

Anyone know?

Bringing this back, doing an aluminum Gen IV 5.3 engine and I need to run a Corvette style Balancer. I believe this would bolt right on??

Anyone know?

Default The Balancer is the same

It’s not different, someone must of had the balancer off at some point and decided to put that flat seal on it. No idea why someone would put that seal on the balancer. Just throw it away, it doesn’t belong.
