Default Gen III/IV 6.0 Iron block, how much stroke?

How much stroke can be added without work to the block? Is 4" possible without clearance issues?

A small notch has to be ground into the bottom of the cylinder to clear the rod bolt on 4" and greater

Thanks Whistler. Any idea how much it would cost to get done at a machine shop? Or is it possible to safely do myself?

It's fairly easy to do yourself, just a little time consuming. Unless you have another already notched block to go by, you have to pre-assemble the bottom end and mark where the rod bolts hit, then grind the needed clearance.

That is about what I figured. I will assume that If I do not go any farther than I need to there will be no holes in the water jackets?

Everything should clear after the little notching, why not let a machine shop do it? Aren't you going to send parts for cleaning or checking anyway?

I would trust myself more than the machine shops here... seriously. I figure that I can at least do the notching and borrow the tools to check all my part sizes. I will be starting with a new block so after I check it all out I can just get it cleaned and assemble it.

My buddy built a motor and spent hundreds of dollars that could have been saved with a little research and initiative. No one seems to know what they are doing here, and the ones that do seem to know don't do it every day. I just don't trust it.

I had a 2002 6.0L block which required NO clearancing for an 4.000" stroke with Eagle 6.125" rods.

I will also enjoy the learning curve... (HINT HINT, this is where you guys can give a newbie a few pointers on assembling an LS based bottom end) I helped build a SBC 400 once, but they just bought parts and threw them together without checking... They got lucky IMO. I will be more cautious.

On a sad, sad note, last night someone keyed the HELL out of my buddies 94 Camaro with a $4500 paint job on it. They got all the way through the paint all the way down the car. Best of all the paint was discontinued. It is horrible for me because I helped a lot with that car. If we find out who did it... and then some and maybe even some

You need special pistons for 4.00 stroke 6.0. They are shorter.....sorry I don't know the part numbers.

I will assume that the shorter piston is designed for a stock length rod?

You are not really that far from WPB, why don't you contact ls2formula or 98z28cobrakiller on here in the forced induction section. 98z28 has a 370 lq9 based block motor with a stock crank in it and he has gone 8.90's in it and ls2formula has a 422 lsx motor that has gone 7.90's. find out who has built their motors and see if they will put yours together.

I'd have a sponsor build you a shortblock. Unless you have direct acces to a machine shop...

my ls3 required no notching with a 4" calies compstar crank and rods.
so your not having the bores checked for tapper or to see if there out of round? and you have the tools to measure the bearing clearances?
