Default build my 6.0 and questions

well i am going to be picking up a 6.0 shortblock id like to use stock heads i can get heads ported for a good price. very reputable local shop. whats a good combo?

im new at these motors but am willing to learn.

the goal is a 525-575 horse motor trying to run low 11's in a 3100lbs nova

i am thinking somewhere in the range of 11 or 11:5-1 compression
aftermarket rods
i was going to use the edelbrock victor jr intake and control box also.

so what is there out there for a combo like this?

cam suggestions??? piston suggestions?

im pretty sure JE makes a high compression piston so that you could use the stock 317 casting heads ( assuming your gettin a lq4 or lq9 6.0 ) and as far as your cam i would have one specd for a carb setup so that it has a 108 or 110 ect LSA

thanks for that info,

but i got a longblock 6.0 with a set of ported 853 heads and a trex cam all for 900 bucks.

im keeping it a carb'd setup but would like input on some of the nice combos out there




but im not sure how well the trex cam will work isnt thatn FI cam? but the duration seems about right

heck in the gen 1 283 im running its 258/262 @050 and thats on 1:5 rockers!

so i found a deal n a set of rec port heads from the local junkyard should i jump on these or stick with the ported 853's either way they come with the motor.

the rec ports can be had from the local junkyard for around 100-125 a piece.

Rectangle port? What are they off of? I would suggest you do a little research in the newbie tech section before going any further.

the rect port heads are from LS3, IIRC...L76 ,LY6 (New style Chevy truck 2500HD and some vans) and of coarse L92s

Thats a pretty good price on some l92 heads. I think i paid around 300 each for mine bare. They were brand new castings though. I would stick a carb intake on what you got and run it. Are the pistons flattop or dished?

If flattop with unmilled heads you will already be around 10.5 depending on head gasket.

ok i was just wondering, because i am having this thing bored .030 because it needs a cleanup. i am undecided on aftermarket rods right now nor just having my stockers re-done. this is going to be a drag racing only deal really. im going to stud everything i can. yes i have a few friends who work locally haha. but this is why i was asking if it would be worth the trouble to get those rec port heads and go with those. i would also have them ported and polished.


im great with gen one but this stuff is kicking my butt. but it'll be worth it.

Stock crank has proven to be good to around 1000hp. Rods i think are around 600hp. Scat and K1 are 2 of the best "budget" rods.

What are your goals?

How good are the ported heads you have now?

they are decent i am going to have them finished off by a good local shop. my goals are at least 550-575 tyring to make the 3100lbs nova run some 10's and still ahve the combo be reliable and not running on the ragged edge. this is why i was asking about combos in the 11:5-1 or 12:1 compression range as this is where i am headed with this build.

now it came with a t-rex cam is that worth using on a carb'd application or is it strictly an FI cam?

i would jump on the heads from the junk yard. the l92/ ls3 heads flow a ton over what you have now. and than just have a new cam specd out for the carb setup because ls3 headed cars require a different duration split than cathedral style ls1 heads. u could always sell the trex cam
