Default Gen IV (LS2) swap to Gen III (LQ4) what to do about knock sensor?

I'm ditching the Maggie and going with a twin turbo setup, and I figure that I'm going to want to turn up the boost a decent amount, so I should build up a nice stout engine while I'm at it.

I sourced out an LQ4 and after getting it home and checking it out, I noticed that the knock sensor is in a different spot. After some research I realized that the cam sensor is too. The cam sensor seems like an easy enough switch, but what do guys do with the knock sensor? They're a different type of sensor, and all I can find is info/adapters for guys going from Gen III to Gen IV, but not the other way around (like I am going).

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I went the Gen III to Gen IV, but I would check and see if your stock knock sensor mount to the side of the block, since I'm guessing the LQ4 has them under the valley tray like the LS1. Hopefully your KS will mount to the side of the block, and then just reuse your LS2 Valley cover

Delete them and be done with it. They aren't going to help save your motor. They just become another source of problems.

There are no "extra" holes in the side of the block from what I can tell.

Mine are currently on the side, and it's a different sensor all together. So I don't think it'd work under the valley cover spot.

Sorry but that's not an option. I'll be running pretty high boost levels and 800+RWHP. I wouldn't be comfortable at all not running them.

I guess I might be seeing what the aluminum block can handle, or drop some big coin on the ERL Superdeck.

Then you need to replace the sensors with Gen 3 type and screw them back in the same spot as the ones you have. If the block is not drilled and tapped then you will have to do that. The 6.0 block should have them under the valley cover. You can put them there. In my opinion at those power levels the stock sensors are not going to help.

Wow.

There are likely pads on the side of the block with no holes in them right where your sensors would have been. Drill and tap them for your sensors. Keep your sensors and wiring. They work great on the side of the block and should NOT be deleted.

^^^^^^^^

Thank you.

I was noticing those areas lastnight, but they are only on the drivers side of the block. So I'd have that side covered. The areas that are 'sort' of like that on the passenger side, have large vertical holes coming up through them already.

Would you have any idea where guys put the passenger side sensor? There is a blank area up at the front corner beneath the head, but I don't know if that's an adequate spot.

Pay no mind to the RTV on it. There is a hole where that one went in. I was going to cut it flush before i drilled and tapped, but then I figured it would hold well enough and do what it is inteded to do.

We will see!

Lol I thought you filled the hole with JB Weld at first glance.

Thank you very much for the help. If I stick with this iron block I'll definitely be going the route you have.

FYI, they do make iron blocks that use the LS2 style knock sensor locations and cam sensor locations as wel.....but you have to look harder.

photo album for 370 engine in an LS2 06 GTO. The engine is nearly done. Just have a few minor things to do. Like address the hole in the block that need to be plugged. Because the GTO pan uses the dip stick in the pan.

I am thinking about doing the same swap in my 06 GTO because my turbo'd stock motor needs a rebuild. What all needs to be done? to make an LQ4/LQ9 work?

I have gen 4 sensors on LQ9 and found the sensor location in the block already there but if not just find a spot on the side of the block where to add them and use sensors you have.

You can also weld a drilled and tapped flat bar anywhere you find convenient on the side of the block just be sure is not hollow underneath as to not amplify noise.
