Question Stock L92 Dyno Specs

Hi all,

Im thinking of grabbing a L92 for a non - automotive build that will require max power at 3000 RPM. Before I do that, I'm just curious what kind of numbers the stock engine puts out at that RPM, but no luck. It's like the power chart on this engine is some kind of national secret.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Mike

I would check with cam manufacturer. See what the cam specs were for the gm big block 366 cu.inch heavy duty truck motor and try a cam like that. Probably not a good head to work with. Put some small valve 5.3 heads on the block with the truck intake also.

Would love to, but it has to be light.

Yeah,

I was thinking the 5.3 heads might be the ticket to keep port velocity high. At 3000 RPM, the little heads are likely still about right (no restriction). I'll bet the 5.3 cam is a good choice too... Anyway, mods are a ways off.

I'd still like to see the complete dyno chart on a stock L92, but all I can find are the peak numbers... Not really all that useful for my purpose

I'll just leave this right here.

FYI: L9H is L92 with flexfuel capabilities....

Isn't the E-rod engine a plug and play L92? Horsepower TV did a dyno test on one a few months back, but I don't remember the exact numbers, should be fairly easy to find.

I feel its a waste to use this engine with a rpm limit of 3k. If you would share what you need out of a engine we might be able to help you.

It is a feasibility exercise to see if the engine can be built as a power replacement for the 300 HP class aircraft engines. These are usually 520-550 cubic inch flat sixes and they put out 250-310 HP @ 2500-2800 RPM. The RPM limit is based upon the propeller tip speed – once the tips go supersonic, efficiency drops off the table. The aircraft engines weigh anywhere from 350 – 550 pounds.

For many years the auto engines could easily compete power wise (the airboat crowd has been using 500 inch Caddy’s and BBC’s for years), but it is only until recently that the weight is coming down to where we need it for flight.

I have my feet in both camps as a hot rodder and an airplane guy, so I’ve been watching the development of the LSx with extreme interest. I also happen to own a little 5.3 in my 02 Yukon, had an LS2 in my GTO, and now drive behind an LS3 in my Corvette.

So that’s the backup. ...as a feasibility study, I’m interested in seeing what kind of power can be made with essentially off the shelf parts with this engine in NA form.

Wouldnt a very long runner intake be the best option? Think to the L98 engines that peak really early due to the 9.5inch runner length.
