Default hv oil pump or not

I am building a 429 ci ls3 alum block. 4.070 x 4.125 mains .0028-.003 rods .002-.0023.

In my application keeping enough oil in the pan can be a bit of a challenge at times. Adding 1/2 quart helps.

Will running a hv oil pump make it worse or is it something should probably have because of the aluim block and clearances I have?

That is a huge clearance for mains on a LS motor. From my expereince and everything
I read .002 is the max max for mains. Std pump works fine, even for road racing.
If you run .0028, you will need a high volume pump with a big shim to get any oil pressure..

Agree!

My LS3 LPE block had those type of clearances and could not maintain pressure once the oil was at track temps. That was with a high volume pump. I pulled the motor to have the clearances tightened up. Street driving was fine. Main clearances are now in the .0022 range. LPE still installed a shimmed high volume pump. Cold oil pressure is extreme now but I have no problems maintaining 50 psi at 260 degrees at the track. I just keep the revs below 2000 rpm until the oil is at least 150 degrees.

I run the Melling 10296 in my 2000 fbody and have had 0 problems.

Though I did have the oil pan enlarged to the front. Full fill ( oil change ) with filter is 6 1/2 quarts. Just clears my tubular K member by 1/4 inch.

Mine maintains 50psi @ a 750rpm idle with a ls2 block and 4.125 stroke.

Granted a little too much oil splashing around may take away a few HP, but I'd rather have a little more oil then not enough.

I ran the HP spring in my old set up and will be running it in my new 416 build. I never had an issue and I loved the fact that I had 60lbs at start up and never moved from there no matter how hot is was. At WOT it was at 75ish. I would always add 1/2 quart more and ran pennzoil or quakestate 10-30 always. NO issues ever.

Why so much clearance on the mains?

I would try to get away with a stock pump. High volume pumps push a lot more oil to the valve covers and away from the pan/sump.
