Default MAST 305cc LS7 Heads or GM LSX-LS7 head for a NA 427

Hey guys,

First off I appreciate your input, and all the knowledge around here. As some of you may know I am building a LSX 427 for my bird. It will be NA (if I did any power adder it would be a small spray in the 125 range). I will not be chasing NHRA times, I'm more into a Street/Strip toy that will see AX use some, looking to hit 650rwhp hopefully. I am coming around to buying heads, and am up in the air on the heads. I will explain my 2 options below hopefully you guys can help direct me (you avid builders and shops). I am a Service Mgr at a GM Dealership so I buy parts @ Cost + 10% is our policy. So keep that in mind.

Option 1 GM LSX Performance Parts Heads:
I can acquire this head at -20% below cost from a Dealer I found on the Locator this afternoon So I would be looking at $1,20.80 per head ($1276.00 cost minus $255.20). I know this is an as cast runner. So I would be in for the pair @ $2,194.72 (with 7.5% to the man).

Option 2 Mast Motorsports LS7 12 Degree 305cc 6 bolt head:
Which would run me $3198.00 for the pair. Found in the link below...

http://www.mastmotorsports.com/2010/...sembled&id=377

My question is...Which is the better head option. I know the GM head I will still want to send off to Richard @ WCCH to have portwork done. So I will prob have close the the same price invested when all is said & done. Which is the better pkg of valvetrain used though is the input I'm wanting as well as head for my build. I CANNOT thank you all enough for the guidance and information you will provide.

650 NA at the wheels is a big number and certainly will not be a very good autocross build when mid-range pull is important. It will take a sheet metal or carb type intake which won't deliver the kind of power you will want.

Just my $02.

Thanks, I guess I should clarify a lil more....It's not being built for an AX car, but yet it was used as a ref it is seen competition it would be more of the AX platform vs DRAG

I appreciate your $.02 as well, but could you at least give input on the topic of why the thread was started?

The mast head will probably make more power, but I agree with WKMCD on all of his points.
Good luck

Something to ask Mast about: what rockers will you have to run with those heads. I have the LSX head myself and had to decide what type of rockers were going to be used. With the standard stud mount, it allowed me to buy Harland Sharp bolt in rockers vs the shaft mount systems for around 2 1/2-3 times the cost. My car hits the dyno today and I can update you how well the WCCH LSX heads perform.

You can actually run stock rockers on our heads up to 660 or so lift without any issues. (The majority of our crate engines run stock rockers)

Other than that Jesel or T&D would be the way to go!

Our Black Label 305 LS7 heads make about 25hp more than our standard Black Label LS7's on a naturally aspirated 427!

What about your standard Black Label LS7 vs OEM Heads? Was that gain with the standard intake manifold or fancy ones?

Thanks for the insight def want those 305CC runners even at my COST on GM heads. I think by the time I invest CNC work into them. Yours are still gonna be hard to turn down!

Mast makes the best Ls castings out there. Seen both GM and Mast castings and I think it's worth the extra cash for the Mast.

The mast heads sound awesome. but its a tough choice.

Before today I would've said WCCH... hands down.

but the 305cc MASTs sound sick. (Hearing about them for the first time today)

Im gonna have to make this same decision for my build in a couple months. To replace my stock LS7 Heads

I talked to dwaine, I think that's his name. at MAST today and I'm thinking about ditching my GMPP LSX 454 ls7 heads for the MAST 305 ls7 CNC'd heads and a their cam they use in their 710hp 454 motor. I figure with that combo and a mill job to take my motor to like 11.5:1 I should make 680 crank hp and like 550+awhp in my TBSS. Will be a all motor monster throw in a 150 shot and I'll run 10's in my sleep

I run MAST heads and stock style rockers with their beehive springs. Its the best thing I've EVER bought for my car. I think at the end of the day, you will wish you bought the mast heads.

Mast is the way to go...as a graduating engineer I would love to work for such an innovator in the LS aftermarket industry...
