Default Cam help for LS3 418

Alright guys the time has come and im looking to go with a bigger cam for my ls3 418 setup, Right now I should be around the low 500s mark, however I'M running a small 236 duration cam that was used in the old 383 setup.... My goals are to make 550+ so I know im going to have to go with quite a bigger cam which means I will loose some low end in trade for top end... I was thinking about going with ThunderRacing's new stroker v.3 cam (247/251 - .624/.632 - 112 lsa) since it put down nice numbers on a 383 with almost the similiar setup as mine, Or I was goin to give texas-speed a call and ask about their 251/259 660/663 111LSA cam they have.... Now i know these are HUGE cams and will effect driveability on the street but the car only sees the street a few times a year and my main focus is the track now so I;m all about making serious power now and not worrying about street manors, Any help would be greatly appreciated, I want all your guys opinions!
My setup is as follows:

LS3 418
Trickflow 225s CNC ported
mild 236 cam
fast 90/90
moser 9" w/ 4.11s w/ detroit locker
fully build drag suspension

Keep in mind I do plan on spraying, and was told both of these cams work well with nitrous

Have you considered talking to Patrick G for you cam specs? IMO its worth $25. The man knows what hes doing when it comes specing a cam for your needs.

no i havent, but i dont mind spending the 25 on some good help, however i do know the fast 90 is probably choking me up top and holding me back, if thats the case, im considering a fast 102 or a victor jr with 4150 TB

What's your SCR and DCR? Have the heads been flowed? If you have this information available it will really help any good cam guy spec you a perfect cam. IMHO, the FAST 90/90 will be plenty IF it's properly ported. Pete Incaudo did my heads, intake and TB, flow tested everything and then spec'd my cam for me. While my combo is not a max effort combo, it makes great power and still has decent driveability even with 27* overlap on the cam. Cam is a COMP XE-R 248/254, .612"-.648" on a 112+2 lobe.
Numbers in my sig are on a pretty rich tune with low total timing due to only 91 octane fuel available around here. SCR is 11.85 and DCR is right at 8.4.
I know if we lean it out to 12.9 AFR and kick the timing up to 28* or so and get some decent fuel for it, (or Torco) it will make around 560/500 to the tires. Needless to say, I'm very happy with my combo and I have Pete to thank for it working as well as it does. Good luck.

Sorry but is it possible to find your DCR without knowing what the cam specs are going to be?

got in touch with my engine builder today and was told my valve springs are good up to a .650 lift and my pistons have plenty of room, im most likely going to go with a Comp Cams LSL 243/247 .624"/.624" on 113+3 LSA

I'd go bigger! I would go with a Thunder Racing Custom Camshaft
"sTRoker" - 248/254 - .615/.623 - 112 lsa 2400-7500 RPM Power Band. Just my .02

isnt the stroker v.3 newer and make more power than this one??? i also believe that u cannot use 1.8 rockers with this cam, im around 520rwhp 505tq now with a baby 236 cam, so im trying to step it up to something much bigger but withotu having to change my valve springs and get my heads milled and flycutting, my springs can hold up to a .650 lift

id go bigger also if your looking for all out power. Those are very similar to my specs. mine is 236/247 .624/.624 114+2, and with the few miles i have on my engine i can tell you its very streetable. I have ported L92's though. Your 225's will like the bigger cam compared to us rectangle port guys. So i think you would be safe going bigger since drivability isn't as important to you. just my opinion.

ur right but like i said i dont want to change my valve springs and rockers so im limited to a .650 lift, i dont know of anything much bigger than the stroker v.3 that i could get away with

also what numbers are you puttin down with ur setup?

You are correct, you cannot use 1.8 rockers with those cams due to the ramp rates. What springs are you running? call comp cams or Thunder and tell them your set up like what your CC size, their flow rates, the cam you want and the springs you have so they can see if your PTV clearances will be ok. They'll bust the calculators out for you but you still have to get your builder to triple check though. Keep us posted.

Our sTRoker V.3 would be an awesome choice and the best of our sTRoker cams, but I would still like to talk to you about your particular setup. Depending on the specifics, I might be inclined to do a custom grind.

Thanks,
Shane
