What compression? On my boosted L76 at 10:5.1 I'm going with head studs just for the heck of it.

The only reason I'd go bolts would be if I was doing a head swap in a 4th Gen F-body with the short-block remaining in the car. It is VERY tight under that cowl and the studs make it worse (not impossible) trying to do that head swap. Otherwise, studs are great!

From a guy who cheaped out and used the bolts, I'd recommend you use the studs. Easier on the block threads, and in the future if you pull the head again you won't have to spend the hours of pain cleaning the coolant out of the bolt holes.

I went bolts but with studs you still have to take the back few out to get the heads off an f car, right? so you still would have to clean those bolt holes.

No , i have studs and pulled the heads a few times and never had to take any out. The only pain that i had is loosing the washers. They are a close fit on the stud and are hard to remove with out a magnet especially on the back of the engine were you cant see down in the head. But i would go with the studs any way because you wont haft to clean the threads and get all the water out of the threads , If all the water is not removed you will crack the block from hydro lock when torquing it down and the studs has a better and even clamping force.

What needs to be done to remove cylinder heads on an F-body with head studs?

I would jam an allen wrench in the stud allen fittings and remove them prior to removing the heads... It would in my opinion make it much easier.

I never had any problem removing or installing the heads with studs, just the washer on the studs was a pain to keep up with

So you were able to lift the heads off without removing the studs? Did you have to remove anything else?
