Default Largest cam on an LS2 w/ported LS3 heads

Hi - Noob here....I did some searching but want to ask this question directly to see what I can find out.

What's the largest cam I can run with this combo: a stock LS2 bottom end/pistons but with LS3 heads that have been ported....

Here are the head specs:

Heads have stock Ls3 valves with a race valve job
70.4 cc chambers hand finished
650 lift springs, titanium retainers
stock rockers
deck milled .020"

thoughts?

Y is the largest cam your concern. Plan out your build, dont worry about the biggest, think more along the line of BEST cam for your setup(and future mods that u have in mind to put in/on the car!) I hope this helps

not a very big one at all with milled ls3 heads, you will have seriouse issues with pistion to valve clearence. you may want to look into flycutting your pistions

This is what my concern was....thanks for this...i dont necessarily want to go w/a big cam, i just like to keep mt options open....I'd like 500rwhp w/an option to throw 100 shot on it once in a while....guess the search continues, afr's or trickflows? any suggestions? 215s or just go 225s?

With 70cc chambers it's going to be a dog on the bottom if you over cam it. You're going to have to flycut the pistons anyways so take the heads down to 65cc by milling them .030. The heads don't really like BIG cams. They do however love the right cam. 234-240 112 worked well for good average power.

That's awesome, but the OP doesn't have 243 heads.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought lift had very little to do with PTV clearance, and it is duration and overlap you have to worrry about.

I was running a StreetSweeper-HT with my LS3 heads, and when my cam designer showed me the specs of the new cam, I about **** a brick. He said "trust me", and I still had plenty room...no fly cutting.

My suggestion is to talk to a cam designer...and be careful of who you listen to here. When I was shopping for L92 heads, I got some terrible advice here.

With heads milled .020 I would definitely check clearance. Those heads have a large intake valve and it does not leave much clearance especially when milled. The largest we would run in that setup would be our 225/230 cam. Anything large in duration and I would be concerned about clearance.

Thanks for all the replies...I do actually have 243 heads (its a stock LS2)....MS4 cam made 451 to the wheels? thats awesome! I was looking at the HPE megadeath cam or some other custom grinded cam...450 rwhp w/nothing but cam/intake stuff is fine with me....I'd probably add a 100 shot for fun haha

Our TRuTorq Level 5 (227/239 115) works very well in that application. In an LS3 it makes nearly 500RWHP. WKMCD is right, those heads don't need or want a huge cam. I wouldn't go over 231 on the intake with a 6.0 block.

FWIW, our TRuTorq Level 1 makes 425-435 in G8's with the L76 6L80 (unlocked) combo. It's a 219/224 115. The level 3 (223/236 115) routinely makes 450-460.

Anything larger just decreases low end torque and driveability. You won't really make any more power upstairs unless you are willing to change the intake and spin the motor higher.

I'm running a carb'd L92 headed setup so I went with the GMPP LSX/LS3 dual plane intake.
The LY6 does come with fly cut pistons, cam is 223/231 @ .050 - .610/.617 on a 112LSA.
Lots of power....no dyno numbers or 1/4 times yet tho. I will say this....even with a full tank of gas thats located behind the rear wheels...on a 50mph punch next to me son in his car while cruising a blacktop 4 lane hiway...resulted in a downshift to 2nd with the wheels breaking loose and (posi) spinning for a couple of seconds before grabbing. And its not even "fine tuned" yet.

I have LS3 milled .030"
My cam is 227/235 @113+4 LSL lobes and I have about .045" intake PVT. Needless to say I'm flycutting the pistons and will replace it with a slightly larger cam.

Adding to above it made 467/411 to the wheels. Next mods should put in the 47x/43x

Jesus H. Christ. You're ASKING about running LS3 heads on a stock LS2 bottom end. Make up your mind what you want advice on.

Regardless...any time you take the heads off and change anything, there is absolutely positively NO excuse to not check PTV.

it was a long long time ago.....but

if your just talking about valves and seats and not the heads and other parts themselves...generally something along the line of a 5 angle valve job on the seats, some will even grind 3 angles into the valve itself...making for smoother airflow past the valve/seat , even possibly special valve seats. It might also pertain to specific valve guide specs, lighter/lightened valves, etc.

If you're hesitant just stick with 243's dude. Sounds like you're all over the place. Do me a favor, go do something spontaneous for once.

Just go with someone that is familiar with the ls3 heads and let them spec you what will work best

XtraCajunSS is awesome and has been VERY helpful to me and is a wealth of knowledge!!

If you want LS3 heads, you can easily sell your 243s to someone with an LS1 and recoup some of the cost.

I really think you need to slow down and think about what you're doing though. Sounds like you're just wanting huge dick-waving dyno numbers. That's the WRONG way to go about modding your car.
