Default LS2 403 cam for LS3 heads

Got my short block together after align honing it...the guy I got the block from had someone do it after they installed the ARP main studs and left them small. Now I need a cam for my LS3 heads. It's a daily driver with LS3 intake and NW 92mm TB. Was planning on getting PAC springs. Was told that a 229/236 or a 225/230 Texas speed cam would work well which was in the range I was thinking. But then I called Comp Cams and was spec'd a 235/243 with .621/.624 lift. I think that's to much but Comp said that it won't surge if tuned properly. I was thinking something like a 228/234 with high 500/low 600 lift. Need opinions please.

Thanks,
John

You have a few more cubic inches than me as mine is a stock LS3 right now. I went with a Comp cams with 223/231 with lift in the low 600s. I have run big duration cams before and did not like the driveability. Not that that one you spec is a real big duration but if it is a daily driver it might be slightly on the high side. Now if you are going for all out HP stick with it. More cubes can handle more duration so take that into consideration.

i went with ed c @ flowtech who spec'd this for my build; somewhat ported topend, 95mm tb, made 500 whp (in retrospect i should have had the heads flowed)

236/248, .651/.629, 110*lsa

definitely takes getting used to, especially for a daily (i think 4.10s would help a ton)

FWIW: I've run 4 or 5 cams and none have been as big as the one Comp spec'd or the Ed Curtis cam and I made 530/480RW in the 403 build. I don't even run one that big in the 577/530RW 427.

Sometimes bigger is not better.

I think I'm going to go with the texas speed 229/236 cam and pac 1218 or 1518 springs. Maybe a little smaller.

What camshaft manufactures have you delt with? Only the ones who post here? Call comp cams for help? Unless you speak with Billy Godbold, you will probably have some guy just flip through the catalog on the other end of the phone.

That's exactly what happened. The guy gave me a part number to a cam in there catalog which isn't what I wanted. I'm going to call back today and for this guy billy godbold. I talked to kaytech but he told me his 224/236 LS3 cam would be good but that seems like a big split with a small intake duration. I've talk to comp and Texas speed. Just those three...are there any other well know guys that can spec me a good streetable cam?

Ed Curtis did mine. 243 253. .650.

In this case bigger is better.

I got the 229/236 114LSA cam with PRC .650 dual springs. Hope everything works out with my 7.400 push rods.
