Default Need some Advise Balancer flew off

Well the dealership replaced the longblock on my 2007 escalade under warranty and 200 miles after the replacement I am driving home and the balancer flew off. I had it towed in and they just put it back on and the tech drove it for a couple of days and said it was ok. my question is how internally balanced is the 6.2 and should I worry about the internals being damaged?

I would demand that another dealership do the work, since they obviously don't have competent people working in their shop.

The internals should be fine. If that balancer isn't torqued right it will have issues. It obviously wasn't done right.

I have been checking the bolt every time I drive it to make sure...If it even comes loose I have a brand new one already and will do it myself...I just really hope I didn't screw up any bearings.

it's internally balanced like you said. The 'balancer' on these engines is just a pulley for the belts. The rotating assy is balanced whether it's there or not (well at least within GM's tolerance of balance)

On these engines, it's a harmonic damper not a balancer...which is a little more than just a pulley. If you basically said "WTF was that noise?" and shut it off...you're fine. If you drove it for 4000 overheating miles while the battery died and you had no power steering, I'd be nervous...but it's not like the crank was suddenly trying to smash sideways into the bearings...it's really no big deal.

If the crank bolt is not torqued correctly it will walk out. And always use a new bolt.

Thanks for the input. I just talked to the Cadillac tech on the phone and he said that I can drive it till monday and bring it in to change the oil and make sure it was still clean. If the bearings are messed up would it show up that fast? I plan to drive it about 200 mile before then.

Ok so tonight I hear some kind of noise coming from the top end or from of engine. I take off the belt to eliminate any component like water pump or pulley causing the noise and still have the noise there. I get a hose and try to pin point where it coming from and still I get most of the noise front/bottom of intake. Well I do a quick rev to about 3500 rpms and on the way down the motor sound like a bunch of marbles moving around.

I think it is loose rocker arm but can determine for sure. What would make louder clatter on the way down the rpms. Going up in the rev it doesn't seem to really make noise.

I also talked to the tech from cadillac today and he said drive it till monday and bring it in and we can change the oil and check the plug for metal shavings. If I did damage a bearing(rod or main) would I see damage that fast(200-300 miles of driving)?

my old '02 silverado with a 5.3 did this exact thing. very VERY light load, or on deceleration from a free rev (like you describe) it sounds like marbles boucning around in the motor. standing in front of the motor it sounded like it was coming from the tranny, standing by the side it sounded like it was valve train related, underneath it sounded like it was coming from up top.

i bought the truck in 2008 with 85k miles, sold it 2 weeks ago with 136k and it made the same noise the day I bought it, as the day i sold it. piston slap got a little worse, but that was it. I never cut that truck any slack either, and it never gave up.
