Amazing build! Very much looking forward to more pictures

This is a really nice build sheet, excellent customer service from ERL it seems. A few observations:

1. It would be very interesting to know how they varied the thickness of the Clevite H and HX bearings to achieve uniform main bearing clearances. Maybe a trade secret.... ?

2. The Wiseco piston skirt diameters are all within 0.0002" of each other. That is really good considering my Wiseco's vary by 0.0017" across the set.

3. The ring gaps are the same top and bottom, shouldn't the bottom be a little bigger gap? Maybe it doesn't matter?

4. With deck heights of -0.002" to -0.006", a 0.040" head gasket would be a good choice.

Good luck with the final assembly

Rezin, just saw your response! ERL does some nice work for sure!

I'm not sure what ERL does to make the main clearances. At our Diesel engine shop (work talk ) we will get bearings machined if needed to get in spec. Now to dead match, Like you, I'm not sure how that'd be done.

For the pistons, again I'm not sure how they'd get pistons that close in spec.

The gaps was a question I had as well. According to Wiseco's spec sheet which they sent with the engine, as you noticed, the bottom ring typically is gaped larger than the top ring. This said, it's in spec for a high power NA build, both top and bottom. When I spoke w/ Sean at ERL, I specifically requested that the rings be gaped tightly, b/c it will NEVER see NOS. It'll see a little road racing, drag strip, and 1\2 mile roll racing, but mainly cruising.

Also, if you notice on the spec sheet, the negative value for deck height means ABOVE deck. Not to mention, there aren't valve reliefs in the pistons, but more valve pockets, meaning there is no loss of compression from a valve relief. Where there is a -3cc relief, on the opposite side there is a +3cc rise. So, I'll basically be running 12+:1.

Heads should be in this week (I seriously hope!!!!), so it should be. Couple of weeks, and we'll be able to see what this beast can do!

You have to sort through and measure a lot of bearings to mix and match to get what you need. Getting .0002 - .0003" between the 2 bearing halves isn't much.
With the top ring being steel and the 2nd ring being cast iron with a small edge napier the 2nd ring gap will wear faster and open up on its own when ran. The tighter gaps will be safe for your intended purpose, especially if you plan to do a lot of cruising.
Some piston sets are near identical while other sets can vary quite a bit. It depends on how they are grouped when they sort them for weight.

What cc cylinder head u running to get 12.1 compression?. I think I have same pistons but gotta bore mine out some n get new pistons bc I gotta call from machine shop yesterday n cylinder 6 and 8 were out of round. So unfortunately the guy I bought shortblock off of fucked me.. member on here.. never buy from him again. My heads are 61cc heads

Carl, thanks for the response. Everything seems to be perfect for my purposes. ERL did a nice job with the setup, and the documentation is second to none!

My heads will be 69-70cc chambers. They're getting a clean up mill, but with porting, it's not uncommon to gain a little chamber size. Combine this chamber size with my pistons, the 4.155 bore, and each piston coming out of the whole a little bit I'll be dang close if not a little over 12:1.

Sorry to hear about your motor. What size bore are you going with?

Depends how much it takes to get it cleaned up and fixed. Hopefully a 4.160.. 4.165 bore. If not il just go with a 440 ci. But its not going have off the shelf piston like shops used. Gotta be a custom piston bc of the bore size. Plus lowering the ring lands down for spray

I see, if you're already at 12:1, that is pretty high.

But wouldn't you want to reduce the quench to around 0.035" - 0.040" ? Maybe that wouldn't work with the heads you've already spec'd.

It's not the heads, it's the pistons. The pistons have a valve relief, but rise on the back side of the relief in sense acts as a dome. So you have a -2.8 valve relief, with a +2.8 dome on the backside of the relief. This combined with the pistons coming out of the hole slightly would concern me with a tighter gasket.

Look closely at the piston below:

Haha! I would only expect your best! We'll need to get w/ Hybred and get some shots of all 3 of ours together when they're done! Sliver, Black, and Blue will look clutch!

Well, after 3 weeks, I finally have an update! My heads arrived today! pics will be up as soon as I get them from QMS. My shortblock was already in process of having evetything that installed, installed. So, we should be up and running early next week! After it's up and running, I'll drive it around for roundly 300 miles to break it in. Once it's broken in, it'll be dyno time!
