I'm dying to see the results of this. You'll have RWHP numbers and track times, right? I have a 2000 Firebird w/ an LS7 based 427 w/ TFS 235s, 12:1 compression. Even though I don't drive it on the street much it's more of a street car than track car. My car weights much more than yours at just under 3,400 lbs (3,665 w/ me in it). Didn't turn out as quick as I hoped. Was wanting 135 mph traps in perfect conditions and 132 mph traps in ok/bad conditions. On one very good night I went 10.55 at 133.3 on a 1.59 60 foot. I had it retuned so it's a better tune (meaning it runs better and no longer based 100% on MAF over 2,000 rpm) but much less agressive. Now it will run 130.xx in very good conditions and 128 in not so good conditions. I want to have redline motorsports dyno it and look at the tune but it a busy time of the year for me so it may be a while.

Looks like the build came along great. I've been thinking about picking up a C5 lately. Can't wait to see the results..

And then it was finished....

I have to say, this thing is awesome! I have always heard that cubes soak up cam overlap, and I can now confirm, it truly does! My new cam has 15* of overlap and it has MUCH better street manners than my old LS6 cam did, which, only had 6* of overlap. My cam is flat out tame down low, which I love for my street cruising. I can short shift it, and it drives dang near stock! Now, get above 4500, and it's an animal!

Now, the next thing will be hitting the dyno after it's broken in. I need to rack up a little over 300 miles to break in the motor, and new clutch, and then it'll be dyno time! In the mean time, I also need to gather a few more odds and ends like an LS7 MAF, LS7 CAI, and get my alternator fixed (my rebuilder screwed up something b/c when it was installed it wouldn't charge)! So, in a couple of weeks, we'll see if we can hit 600 at the wheels! Stay tuned....

Love those valve covers and that 434. Great vid. I can't believe it sounds so good and streetable. Cant wait to see and hear a track vid. You said it turns into an animal. How does it sound up high in the rpms and how is the traction?
Congrats ....one of the best builds I have seen. Very impressive.
Do a cockpit vid.

I will be using those cam specs also so I"m going to have to find some 1.8 rockers to go with it. For shure.

Thanks a ton Dave! It's been fun! I look forward to seeing what it does on the dyno and at the track!

At higher revs it's sounds mean! I actually switched back to the factory TI exhaust, which is much quieter than my previous car back. At low revs it's sounds stock tame, but open it up, and it roads!

Traction due to the power band is great below 4k. I would actually say traction is better than a stock C6Z from below 4k. Above, which is I. The heart of the power band, it'll spin like a 60's dragster going down the quarter mile!

Both the clutch and the relo kit are from Katech. The clutch is the LS9X. So far, I love it! It has stock feel (maybe a little lighter actually) and grabs hard!

As for the Katech relo kit, they have everything setup for it on their site. It isn't inexpensive, but the wires that are perfect with their kit, are ~ $55. So, they're actually reasonable.

I'm curious as to how well that clutch holds up, I was considering that one but everyone raves about the McLeod rst for longevity

It's basically a stock ZR1 clutch with upgraded hydraulics for the C5. It should have great life. A whole bunch of guys run it on the Vette forum, and have great life. Of course, McLeod, and centerforce DYAD are becoming more and more prevalent.

Finally unpacked my short block. Do the piston to deck numbers include the high points in our pistons? All my numbers are 0.001-0.003. If this is correct definitely running a 0.04 gasket

That is to the outer flat surface of the piston where the cylinder head chamber is flat and with the piston setting level. Any dome would protrude above that, but there should be open chamber in the heads for any "shelf" configuration. Most aftermarket valve pockets are deep enough for a reasonable cam, but if you have something with a lot of overlap you should check P to V clearance with thinner gaskets.
