Default Lc9 cam choice for 6400lbs Jeep JK

Hope to get some insight on this, opinions and other recommendations..

JK built to be a daily driver, trail exploration rig. I live at 5k ft near lake Tahoe.

I'll need custom tunes, was thinking about Lew Monte's custom diablo tune's

JK specs:
40" tires
6400lbs empty
5.38's

I have a '12 LC9 and 6l80e with VVT and DOD with just 800 miles that I'm planning to swap in..using trailblazer exhaust manifolds. I want to get rid of the DOD but think keeping the VVT would be best for this application.

I talked to Comp Cams and they recommended :
189-401-13 cam
Cam Phaser Limiter Kit
850-16 lifters
26918cs spring kit
7955 pushrods

Thanks for looking!

I think you're in some unchartered territory. I would keep cam specs close to stock. You want to have a relatively mild engine that can idle for hours and have plenty of low-end grunt. Keeping the VVT is a good idea as that will boost low end torque. Also keep the truck intake.

Another thing to consider maybe is using a stock cam from a L92. It's probably bigger than your stock 5.3L cam. I like stock cams because they tend to be easier on the valve train. Also look up the specs on a LH8 cam. I have one that has under 500 miles on it and if you like it, it's yours cheap. It's a single bolt cam but not out of a VVT engine.

I can't find any specs on a stock l92 cam but from what I've been reading their is no drawback to a cam like this Comp cam or similar on the bottom end.

But that's why I posted to see what others suggest so I will keep checking that L92 cam for a 5.3 maybe someone has ran it or the Comp cam.

Thanks

Anyone have experience with these cams in a 5.3 VVT motor or can explane how they would compare with a stock cam from idle to 2000 rpm, I know they are better higher than that.

Comp Cams is WORTHLESS to try to talk to 3 different guys and none seem to give a S***

Cams:
156-400-13
189-401-13

Thanks

Well, I'm moving forward with this Cam and related parts, getting all from Scoggin Dickey.

Next on the list is finding a tuner that can help me dial this in, LS and 6l80e and getting whatever hardware is needed for this.

I've talked to a couple.....not up their alley.

So any suggestions?

Thanks

Call the guy at Motech in Las Vegas. He does a lot of these conversions.

Awesome Jeep! I just started the transformation on my '14 Rubicon Unlimited. As soon as I get the time to finish the engine for my C5...the LS1 I'm pulling will be finding a home in my Rubicon.

Call Martin @ Tick Performance on the cam. While I'd be willing to bet he hasn't spec'd many cams on this sort of build (could be wrong)...he will probably be able to help.

Edit: sorry didn't see the part about you getting the cam from SDPC

Few more questions.

Been reading about the oil pump..since I'm keeping the VVT any reason to change the pump or otherwise worrie about this pumps higher pressures?

Also any issue using schaffers 5-40 syn oil, I use it in everything else and buy 55 gal drums.

Here are the specs:

Moly 204
boron 5
silicon 9
sodium 3
calcium 2539
magnesium 5
phosphorus 856
zinc 1047

TBN is 10.9

Thanks.

I'm have the same set up from Motech and am shopping for a vvt cam. What cam did you settle on and what feed back do you have? Did you dyno and tune it?

Thanks Tony

I picked a Comp cam #189-401-13, Cam Phaser Limiter Kit, their springs and pushrods, LS7 lifters.

I haven't installed it yet and won't till Motec brings out their new Aluminum bracket kit for the accessories.

I'm expecting once I get custom tunes I should see 100hp+- at the crank.

Let me know when you do. I had a L33 previous to this with a 219/227 duration at .50 with 607/623 lift and CNC Ported heads with matching springs/pushrods in the Jeep. I ended up with 315 to the wheels, it wasn’t very street friendly and as DD I decided to put that on hold and just run a stock LC9.

Now that technology/interest in tuning VVT is getting better I want to dust off those ported heads and put a VVT Cam that is street friendly. I doubt we can get 100 RWHP out of it based off from my L33 dyno. I would think 60-70 is more realistic with the drop in compression from a L33 (9.9 to 1) to a LC9 (9.5 to 1) and smaller cam profile.

I’m searching around now to find someone near me here in MI that is good with tuning VVT. I hear TJ at Baker Engineering is good but haven’t gotten a response back from him on the email that I sent him.

Keep me posted Tony

There are plenty of people with afm/dod delete kits with and without vvt, all using that same oil pump as you without issue. I am sure you will be fine.

I am very interested in your results with this cam in a 5.3 motor. It's the exact cam I want to use in a LC9 build. I will be watching this.

this is my 08 which is a Motech conversion, done almost 3 years ago. It has a 11' lc9 in it. DoD is off, I redid the exhaust myself and intake is FAST LSXRT. With me in it, it weighs in at 5030 lbs with a full gas tank too. your going to add a whole lot of weight. The 5.3 and 6l80 added 110 lbs after the conversion.

I have been looking at a MAST 5.3L cam kit. get all the work done on the engine before you install it as you wont have much room to work with.

All the engine work is done and hope to start the install next month.
Will be using the Lc9 accessories and brackets only part to be changed will be the compressor to a Sanden as the Denso is incompatible it seems with the JK controls.

Will post back when its started..
