Default Ls7 titanium rods

Any reliability issues using the titanium rods out of the ls7?i assume not being a factory piece, but don't want to buy if they are not worth it. I stumbled on to a nice used set for a fair price. Not even sure exactly what direction my engine build will take but am starting to assemble parts.

Hi TA,

I suggest you read the post headed People with LS7 internals experience, need advice! because there are very real potential issues with using Titanium rods unless you know all the "tricks of the trade"

If you are going to be running 7,000 RPM or more the Titanium rods are a big plus in terms of the reciprocating mass, but if your going to be running in the low 6,000 RPM I would use steel everyday.

Cheers,

Mark.

Appreciate the thread Mark. Not looking to exceed 6500 for sure so maybe ill stick with steel.

The issue with titanium is it does NOT like to rub against itself or anything else. It make look SUPER smooth(low Ra) but it will still wear ever so slowly between the rod pairs and the valves in the stems.

They are fantastic for high RPM builds but their side to side tolerance will grow faster than any steel or aluminum rod.

Any modern low friction coatings that can help alleviate this issue?

The LS7 rods already have a chromium nitrate coating, some rods the coating has wore off apparently this was fixed by 2011. You can run an oil sample will show Titanium if the wear is excessive with a running engine, otherwise visually you will see scoring on the sides of the rods big ends during tear down (if damaged) and the coating has wore off. Apparently Calico can re apply the coating, if no wear has taken place.

GM has a TSB for the wear referencing "Ti Dust" ; the worn material from the rods forms a dust that can be embedded into main/rod bearings (from what I understand. )

Interesting. Considering doing a 402 stroker with ls-7 rods, crank, and custom Pistons but maybe it isn't worth the potential problems.

Also on newer LS7 rods (2011+?), it will be chamfered along the parting line. I'd say those would be most desirable.

2006-2013 LS7 rods were supplied by Mahle
2014+ LS7 rods are supplied by Pankl

I recently saw a thread elsewhere someone was using these rods in a Ford circle track engine without issue.
