Default LQ9 build ?

I'm new to the LS engines as I've always played with GM's old "small blocks". I'm building a '55 Chevy Sedan with a LQ9 6.0 and Tremec 6 speed, 3.70 gear rear for street use. I want it to run good, although have no need for nitrous or a turbo or a drag race engine. This is what I have... a LQ 6.0 block and crank, LS6 #799 heads, LS1 intake. Melling HV HP oil pump.

I'll need to purchase flat top pistons, will probably bore and hone the block .010 - .020. Leaning toward a Night Fury cam 233/242 113. Suggestions if this is a good reliable package? Suggestions for a piston and ring kit? ..cast is fine for my application.

Any forum sponsors sell a rebuild kit without cam, and oil pump?

Look into ws6store or Brian Tooley Racing. Both sell rings and pistons and are great to deal with. As far as choice go i recommend wiseco or diamond pistons.

The LS1 intake will make less power than the truck intake that came on an LQ9, the LS1 is the second worst intake GM used on these motors, second only to the intake used on the FWD 5.3l.
The HV pump is unnecessary and if not racing I would go shorter on the duration of the cam.

Basic cast pistons if anyone makes them for this application would be a step backwards from stock.

Honestly for what you are doing I would have bought a running engine and put a mild cam in it, improving the shortblock is not cheap, offers little gains for the money and exposes you to risk of local machineshop incompetence. I trust GM more than the vast majority of local shops.

I 2nd 96Caprice. You can get a fully reconditioned LQ9 with new piston rings and all (except intake, oil pan, and front/back plates) for about 2550 shipped.

Check out BTR for basic Pistons/rings. But I'm guessing your rotating assembly would have to be rebalanced. I could be wrong though.
