Default Buy/Build 408 Stroker vs H/C/I LS2

What's up guys new to the forum so sorry if this is in the wrong spot just felt it would be best here and did some searching around but didn't quite answer my questions, so here's the deal.

I'm looking to buy an LS2 car, it will be tracked and not quite a daily but atleast a weekend car. One of my questions is would I be better off buying a car with a 408 Stroker vs Doing the build myself? What is ROUGHLY the cost of doing the build my self? I see some 408 cars going for roughly 13.5 up to 20k. So a 12-15k car plus ??? For a 408?

Now to my next point. I'm looking to be at ~500whp and ~500tq. Obviously a HCI setup won't get me the torque I'm shooting for, but reasonably close to the rwhp. But when talking track times what differences can I expect on a full HCI set up compared to a 408 Stroker car? Streetability on HCI car Vs 408 car? Thanks guys sorry if somethings are written wierd, a little early!

If you are building it for more track use then I would purpose build a 408. Or 402. As for build costs....I would say that depends on your patience. And the ability to wait for some used parts to come available at cheaper prices. That is what I did and my build was approx 6k. Only thing I bought new were the pistons since I went with a rare 406ci build. But a lot of money can be saved with patience. Things I would advise not to skimp on would be Lifters* Push rods* and rockers*. Those are some of the most important pieces that not many give enough respect towards.

But buy the LS2 car and run it the way it is while you assemble parts for a build. little by little. Also, No need to go to a big LS name engine builder or machine shop. It's not like the LS engine family is some magic JuJu. And a lot of those shops since they know its the popular motor family currently IMO gouge prices pretty bad. My machinist did a spectacular job balancing my rotating assemply, boring the cylinders, and sizing the bearings correctly and I paid all of 800$. Just a back woods SBC type circle track racer machine shop. Other popular and known LS builders (some sponsors here) wanted 2k +

Have the stock 243's sent to either AI or TEA and retain the stock lightweight valves if you plan on staying high in the RPM range at the track. Valve stability and geometry is huge.

I'm doing a 408 for my 04 2500 truck. New rotating assy. are 2k and up depending on the brand and options. If you build your own then you also have the added cost of upgrading the intake and fuel system to feed it. A built car or truck should have these upgrades already. The cost of these engines are high. I paid 400.00 for a complete gasket kit. The stock heads even if you port them will be a limiting factor on how much power you make.
