The 454 vs. boost issue was news to me but this seems to be the consensus across the board. I suppose we could always reuse the internals with Darton sleeves if we wanted boost in a year or so. The ultimate goal of this engine was 1,000 whp.

IDK on the LSX block but the 4.1+ stroke pulls the piston down too far out of the bore on a stock LS block and the piston design makes the piston a bit weaker because of pin placement (IIRC). The Bore is is the 4.185, head gaskets will be damn thin between the cylinders and is the main reason I stopped at 4.155. I was told NO boost and no more than a 100 shot on a 4.185.

I too, would have stuck with a 4.125 bore and a 4.00 stroke, with a 1,000rwhp FI goal in mind. You just don't need the extra cubic inches, and it would increase reliability.

Everything has to be well planned out to hit 600rwhp on a 454ci LS motor. It isn't easy to fill a motor that large, with an OEM LS7 intake. And the compression and cam required to do it will be counterproductive, when going FI.

Unfortunately, asking questions now is a little late...All of this should have been discussed before you purchased anything. Also, rushing a build like this with a tight deadline is just asking for issues. I've seen it many times. What are you using for pistons/rings/rods/crank?

I know the LSX 454 Crate engine from GM has a 4.185 bore and a 4.125 stroke. I'm thinking this should be fine with an N/A build. Just curious, which shop recommended to not boost a 454? I've seen some forum members advise against it but you never know if they're a credible source or if they just read the article where the Camaro blew up his crate 454.

The last 'shop' I saw speak negatively about boosting a 454 was John Bewley of LJMS. If you don't keep up with the boosted world, you may not have heard of him. He knows his stuff, and I guarantee he would never recommend your combo for a 1,000 RWHP build.

Beyond that, I'm sure just about any other shop that specializes in big power builds would say the same thing.

There are shops that will build a 1200+hp boosted 454LSX, but they use the the tall deck version, which runs a 4.125 bore and 4.250 stroke. The same shop limits the displacement to 402ci, when using the short deck.

And the guy with the Camaro had something else going on with his motor. That's not the type of failure that I'd expect to see. It's not that you CAN'T boost a 454 short deck...you just have to be careful how hard you push it. A smaller bore setup could be pushed harder.

The right way for an engine that big is to go tall deck.
