Piston dome hits the head

Default Piston dome hits the head

Was checking clearances during assy and hit a major snag!

The Piston dome hits the spark plug boss!
The options are to remove metal from the plug boss, or remove metal from the top of the piston.
The plug boss could be modified(cut down)
or
A small notch in the dome would fix it (1/2"x 1/2"x .040")
Which is the proper remedy?

Quench is .037" with a .040' head gskt, Heads are stock LS3, Pistons are custom CNC billet.
Short block has been line honed, balanced and assembled.

Have the heads done... Are you sure the pistons were made for a LS3 head? This should not happen with the proper pistons.

You can do either. I would start with removing the boss in the chamber and see if that gets you the clearance you need (~.060"). If that doesn't work, then start removing material in the dome with a bull nose end mill. It takes a lot of aluminum to really throw off the balance of the crank, but I would still want to keep it to a minimum.

Sometimes this happens with custom stuff, especially big domes. I would give the piston supplier a call and let them know so they can make a change to the design in case you need another piston later down the road.

This case is weird cause the spark plug seats well inside the combustion chamber so either the plug is too long for the application or the Pistons were installed front side to the back imo.

Removing the boss was my first thought, but I would have to run a short threaded spark plug and I wonder if the threads would pull out of the head.
Thoughts?

You are talking about the little bump by the plug...


...that gets removed in all the CNC ported heads, right?

Depends how much grinding you do I guess. You can probably take off some of the bump and some of the dome so neither is really too aggressive to cause problems.

Got any pictures of your pistons?

Black on black ....Thicker gasket will just kill my Quench, which is at .037"
Camster... the heads have never yet had a plug in them.
KCS....I will see about a pic

I dont really have a problem with running a shorter reach plug. What reach do they run on CNC'd heads?

Just the typical NGK TR/6 style plug. I think the CNC programs typically just mill down and profile that bump without really mowing down the threads.

If its a solid dome then you could relieve it. Some big cc dome pistons have it built in, like the +12cc domes below. Or as other have stated can mill down boss

Yeah, that's a pretty large dome. No wonder it's having clearance issues.
