Default ls2 Rebuild

What's up gents. Need to pick your brains. I have an ls2 that I am rebuilding. I need some advice on the lower end. The engine currently has about 80k on it. It's a back up engine for my TBSS. I am going with an LS7 cam and springs up top. Doing a valve job on the heads. Don't want to build a monster. Would like to get about 500 or so hp. Need some help on the bottom end. Do you guys have any suggestions.

Thanks
B

Do you have any specific reason for a rebuild or just planning it because of miles? 80K is just getting started for the LS2 if it hasn't been abused. I would leave it alone. Also wouldn't worry about a valve job unless you are doing that to gain flow from an actual performance valve job. These engines last.

I purchased the engine with no other info other than it has 80k,it ran good, and it had no problems. You also right about mileage. My current engine has over 200k on it. I know my current motor won't last forever. Planning for the future. I would also like to get a little more hp out of the replacement.

Thanks

IMO, LS7 cam is a waste unless you just have to have a factory cam. It will make a bit more than the LS2 cam but not that much. Not the most ideal for a heavy vehicle, either. I'd spend the rebuild cash on a custom cam, port the heads, and you'll be at 500(crank) easy.

That's on a stock bottom. Don't want anything to wild on the cam.

Thanks

500 FWHP,
Ported heads AI,TEA, ...,largest CAM MOTION 6.0 Truck Cam,
Ported TBSS, or LSXRT Intake, 1 3/4" LTs, probably minimum
To reach HP Goal with still excellent "Truck" performance.

Nobody said wild. The LS7 cam was designed to meet emissions in a 7.0L with a stick in a 3300lb car and is biased to exhaust duration because of a relatively restrictive factory setup. You have a 6.0, automatic, in a 5000lb truck. You don't need a WILD cam, but one designed to maximize your setup. LS7 cam will likely be a relative dog at low RPMs compared even to the stock LS2 cam.

Absolutely true. The LS2 is a better choice for your application than the LS7 camshaft.

If you want an even better camshaft, this would be a great choice: http://store.cammotion.com/60l-truck...-compression-2

On a LS2, you don't even have to go that far. You'll have closer 550hp at the flywheel with those mods.

You can get 500hp at the flywheel with just a cam and headers/exhaust, CAI

With a good pair of heads you can reach 500 at the crank easily with a smallish cam.

Sucky heads with huge cam... poor drivability, harder tuning, rougher on valvetrain parts. Cost less/cheapest route.

Great heads with small cam.... Great drivability, great throttle response, easy on valvetrain parts. Cost more but lasts longer.
