That's where I started, cause I thought exhaust leak as well. I have Sanderson shorty headers and have checked them a half dozen times. Thanks for the input, I'll probably check em again. Looking like I'm going to start tearing into rod bearings!

The biggest problem here is you do not know any history of the engine ?

It's pretty certain it cannot be fuel/spark related.

You've pretty much ruled out rockers/lifters ? ( try swapping rockers to another cylinder just in case ? )

You've identified a particular cylinder.

So everything is shouting some sort of piston or rod issue. When you had the head off, did anything look different about that cylinder ? Any photos ? Both valves definitely sealing fine and look normal etc ?

If you can live with the ticking...just let it tick til it breaks. If not, probably time to pull that rod/piston out.

Lr4 is gen3 not 4. Gen 4 4.8 in 07 is ly2 and has the afm bosses in the valley. While it doesnt have afm and a reg ls2/l92 valley cover with o rings in the bottom that seal off the bosses, they can leak causing low oil pressure on that cyl and make it make noise and possibly misfire also. this is true of only cyls 4 and 6 and 1 and 7 so you can see how it correlates to what you heard
Its just a thought thats why i asked. the lr4 is 24x and ly2 is 58 also. 2007 was a year for both controllers and both nba and nnbs trucks and gen3 and gen4 engines.

Tech@ws6store, I realized that the motor is a gen 3 after I started the thread. I do see where you were headed with that. Like you said in 07 both versions were used. So no afm on this engine, I like your thought process though, thanks.

Stevieturbo, you are correct, no history, and that is less than ideal. No obvious damage or any abnormal wear when I had the heads off. I did move the rocker off #4 when I first got into it. It did stay at 4. I do think that lifter was bad. After lifter replacement, like I said I don't hear it in the valve train anymore. I did take valve springs off and all the valves seem to be functioning properly. I have the covers off at the moment and will move rockers again and check it again. Might indeed run it till it breaks and just put another motor in. By the time I pull it fix bearings, pay for machining and such, might be cheaper to just grab another engine. Thanks for the input though, I do really appreciate it.

Ive heard spun cam bearings do this. Ive seen a few on 4.8/5.3 blocks.
It def seems half engine speed so that should say valvetrain. Ive also hears ver loud sounds like this come from stray spark either from the metal boot cover or from boot to head/manifold as well.

Thats what it first sounded like to me too. But, when he rev'd it, it didn't get louder. All the header/exh. gaskets I heard got louder when rev'd.

I went ahead and played it safe and pulled the engine apart to the block in my S-10. Found a ruined bearing as I stated earlier. To be on the safe side, I am taking the crankshaft tomorrow to a machine shop to have the crank turned down to .010/.010 and get new bearings. I would rather spend that small amount of money compared to having to find a whole new motor cause it chucked a rod or broke a piston or whatever else could possibly have gone wrong.

Cold start piston slap maybe?? Seems like valvetrain noise but I have heard piston slap sound almost the same in these engines. Either way im with Big Ed on this one.
