Default Camshaft question

Just wondering if any one manufacturer is better then another? If I have specs for a cam is Comp Cams, just as good as Crane, or Texas speed, Lunati or any others. Is there one that's more preferred and why

Understandable why you would ask this question.....even if it's not a very good question.

Consider Comp Cams.......you can go to Comp with the intent of getting a cam with, say, a 224*/234* duration. HOWEVER, given the fact the Comp has like 12 'families' of lobes to chose from, you could end up with 12+ different cams.....all with different performance characteristics and requirements that will give you 12+ results.

And that's just within that ONE brand.

What you really should consider is contacting one (or more) of the several cam 'experts' on this Forum, telling them exactly what you have and exactly what you want regarding your car, and letting them spec you out a cam that would best support your setup and your goals!

IMHO, of course.

Cam Motion, Tick Performance, Brian Tooley Racing, Pat G., etc.

If you're dead set on your specs.....I recommend contacting Cam Motion and having them cut the cam for you.

Every cam has its application. We like to use comp cams because their lobes (well most) are published and easily compared. Most everything is known. Texas Spee is newer to the game but since they have in house dyno and equipment, they have been testing and designing some very potent cams.
If you want to email us with more info, we can get you all set up with a camshaft made for you, whether off shelf or custom grind for the same price!

I'm not dead set on cam spec but was looking at a RCR cam but was just curious if there is a big difference on cams from company to company

Lots of cam companies actually get their cams ground by comp. comp got a bad rap a few years back for some errors in the grinds. I'm pretty sure that issue is long gone. TSP grinds their own cams. Lunati I think does too. And there's cam motion.

Cam motion probably has the most loyal following on here. And I've seen more and more of the cam experts who spec them for a living turning to cammotion.

I'm very partial to cammotion. There are lots of guys who are. My first experience with them they bailed me out of a jam when my cam was ground 9 degrees off (different vendor). And they were very instrumental in developing the low lash solid roller. They also place all their cams on a cam doctor after they are ground and send you the actual measured cam report, not just the spec card.

Anyway, there's one man's experience

Lunati and comp are owned by the same company. They do have separate cam grinds though. For every person casting a vote for one is someone castin a vote for another. Sometimes its due to price only then spin it into their own reasons. Sometimes its about location. Sometimes its about loyalty and friendships. Everyone has a different vote to cast and honestly for a reg street car or truck no one is better than the other.

Thanks for all the feedback. Wasn't sure if ones material maybe better then the other. I do understand workmanship quality will differ. Still have a few months before I decide on a cam for my car.

Oh yeah, Blue Racer, Wolverine and Melling flat tappet cams were piled high at the machine shop that I worked at as a kid. They went in all the stock and mild rebuilds. I don't remember how much we paid for them, but it was not much.

The "Blue Racer" cams used to come with snake oil. Lol
Before lifter companies got the blame for flat tappet cam lobes
Getting smeared during breakin.
