Another stupid question from a first time LS builder
Hey all,
I finally got the block clearanced to where it should be fine. I can actually turn the few rods and pistons installed and have room! I got started on gapping the rings and have 3 put together totally and in the block, but I wasn't sure about the oil rings. On my Weisco pistons, there's a thick groove lock ring, two thin rings and an expander ring. It states that the two oil rings need clearance, but do they need to be gapped in the same fashion? I'd rather feel stupid and do it properly the first time than spend more money than I already have 🙄
Thanks!

I purchased a book from Texas speed that really helped on the smaller details. I believe the oil ring gap was .015 but please double check. Also I checked with the piston manufacturer to double check the books recommendations.
The book in my opinion was the best tool I ever purchased.

I believe Wiseco's instructions say that the thin oil rails need at least .011" clearance. I always check and usually they're good right out of the box, but sometimes they need to be opened up. If they do, I use an old ring to support it when I'm grinding. Otherwise, they're so flimsy that the ring may actually try to bend.

I gapped mine at .015. They were rings to fit a JE piston and they needed some grinding. Wish I had thought about the old ring as a support KCS. I had to go slow, but I was using a hand crank grinder so it was slow anyway.
