I recently cut my first filter open after a fresh build I did myself on a LS3 for my GTO. I had a few silver flakes in the pleats as well, but noting major. 3,000 miles later, it's still going. Ha Ha.

I'm going to cut open the filter again on my second oil change and see what it looks like, but a few speckles here and there shouldn't be anything for concern.

Hopefully it goes well for you man. Seeing metal like this is definitely not for the faint of heart.

So I dried out my filter media and can get the metallic specs to stick to my magnet...does that give any more insight? I thought it was not magnetic at first

Shavings from a bore/hone/balance job that wasn't cleaned well. Sounds more like a dirty assembly/build to me.
