Default LS3 in an fbody "oil turbulence?"

My understanding is that when doing this swap all you have to do around the bottom side of the motor is use the 24x crank and f body oil pan. Everything else should be LS3 stuff (windage tray, pickup, etc).

I'm just curious if there is an incompatibility here that would cause the crank to experience more oil turbulence? Oil turbulence causes oil mist really bad is the reason I ask.

You use that oil pan because that's what fits in the car. Of course you would use the correct windage tray too.
There is no incompatibility. The crank in an LS3 is about identical (same stroke) as the 5.7 unit.
You do NOT change out the LS3 crank.
You DO put a 24X reluctor on the LS3 crank

Lingenfelter Performance Engineering makes a little black box that will translate the 58x crank single into a 24x signal the LS1 PCM can process. It's far less hassle than pulling the motor apart to change the reluctor wheel. I have one my 99 TA with a LSA block 416 and it works well. It can take a few seconds to sync to start the car. Usually a 2 second bump and it the car doesn't start, turn key off and it starts on the 2nd 2second bump of the ignition

That's interesting because the crank in mine came out of a truck 5.3 or 6.0, I forgot. Definitely not an LS3 crank.

No problem swapping the cranks, but I would balance it for the LS3 rods and pistons. The difference between a 5.3L piston and a 6.2L piston is about 100g.

The reason I said not to swap the crank was the re-balance issue. I know functionally they are the same.

Ok I get you now. Yes, the machine shop did balance everything.

I used my LS1 windage tray and pickup tube on my new LS3 block. Everything bolts right up.

If your changing pans, you’ll want to change the pickup tube also.

Same here. Upgraded the oil pan baffle though to this: http://www.improvedracing.com/oil-pa...ffle-p-30.html

For a daily I’d probably go through the hassle of swapping the reluctor. If just a toy then run the box. They can be unreliable. I had my shortblock built from scratch so just went with the 24x reluctor off the hop.

youll also need ls3 timing cover, 1x Cam gear (if you swap the reluctor), Cam sensor extension harness (double check the pin outs as they can often be wired backwards) knock sensor extensions and tap the block for ls1 knock sensors.
