Default What's the average cost of a rebuild?

I have a stock 6.2 aluminum shortblock that could probably use new rings/bearings/hone. I also want a 24 tooth reluctor wheel installed- I'm not sure if that requires a rebalance. Any idea of how much a reputable shop would charge for something basic like that?

How many miles and what type of use has it seen? It might not need overhauling unless there are symptoms of obvious wear or abuse.
These engines see 300k miles regularly before any attention is needed.

That's the thing. I'm not sure. I was told "over 200k" and although it wasn't knocking, idk if it was smoking from the tailpipe. It supposedly sat for a long time, so it probably would've been smoking, regardless. Like I said, cylinders look good, the oil isn't milky, pushrods and valves were fine, pistons aren't beat up... If the lifter bores look ok I might just run it.

If I just run it, I'll have to buy one of those $300 conversion boxes.so I'm just weighing the options and what makes sense.

500 chocolate bars is the most I would spend for typical engines

however 6.2L Aluminum sounds like a more exotic variation than I am familiar with. Which is why I am going to point out that as the value of the engine block increases, or as the difficult of assembly/configuration of an engine block increases, its important to only deal with those who are familiar specifically with that exact block, somebody who has examples vehicles with that engine they rebuilt sitting outside that we can drive or rent. He gives me the keys to a car with a 6.2 in it while he rebuilds a 6.2L as fast as possible to get the keys back. Otherwise do everything yourself

Are you just trying to do a stock rebuild with factory bearings or upgrading the bearings? Factory shortblock rebuild with minimal machine work I’d say around $1000 maybe a little under. All depends on what you are trying to do with the rebuild

I assume that since a factory bearing will usually last quite a long while, they'd be good enough? I race the car, but I doubt I drive it as hard as a pissed off soccer mom in her Escalade from day to day, lol.

Doing it oneself cost hone plus rings, bearings and new reluctor maybe as little as $750 total

Was quoted $800 to $1,000 for the basic rebuild with hone, bearings, rings from a decent shop plus cost of gaskets, new timing set, new oil pump etc for an LS1 a while back.

Have seen $85 to $100 an hour labor with ~ 25 hours mentioned before more involved rebuilds. $1,800 to $2,500

Full machine work and labor from a top notch shop think $3,500 or so..$1,000 in machine work plus $2,500 labor.

BTW - the LPE 58x to 24x trigger big works very well. I have one on my 99TA. Two quick bumps of the key to start or one long crank. Well worth the cost.

I haven't completely ruled out the lingenfelter box. It's just that it seems messy, wiring wise, and I feel like I already have enough clutter, lol.

This is interesting. When I first installed 411ECU gen-3 it had this 'problem'. I messed with fuel settings and got rid of it though. If interested I can open both original and current fuel tables and screen shot + post files
That is assuming you have hptuners?
